OldEastRR,

Thanks for the suggestion, but the bridge on a curve really makes a through truss a problem for snagging equipment.  Plus, the span is so short that I-girders should be able to support this weight.  I think that the railroad would go for simplicity and cost, which would be I-girders over a through truss.  I could be wrong.

DFF

I agree - more likely to choose cost over elegence. Especially SBD in Dave's chosen time period.

Looking good, Mr. Foxx!
Always nice to have some storage for your trains.
Allows you to get more trains to fill up the rest of the layout  :D

Nice how the two yards are inches close, but "miles" of track apart.
[Hmm... insert profound relationship allegory here]

A small, thick copse of big trees on that ridge between the two throats should make a nice scenic divider for yards & layout front/back.

Hope you have fun running trains before tackling your favorite: ballasting!

But not too high; hands have to reach over those trees to 0-5-0 rolling stock and locos.

Just between the throats shouldn't interfere:

Any plans to put a low backdrop?
Even 1/16" styrene 4" high painted black would prevent any knocked over cars from falling down between studs.
(Or we could mock Murphy to his face with "Oh, that will NEVER happen..."  :scared: ).

No matter what, glad you did the staging: will definitely make operating the layout much more funner  :D

M.C., you nailed it.  Just a few trees to provide some cover between the layout and the staging yards should do it.  There will be very little 0-5-0'ing in the staging yards, because I have crossovers for runaround purposes.  But, there will be a need to manually uncouple cars and reach the slide switch turnout controls in the yards.

Yes, I plan to take some scrap Masonite from when I finish the fascia and put up a 18" or 24" high backdrop.  For now, I've got some space between the last track and the edge of the shelf to prevent derailments from going down in the wall cavities.

Oh, and the layout is already "way more funner."  ;)

Thanks,

M. C., what shade of green ground foam did you use on those trees, Fukishima?

Too soon

No, I'm just basking in the radioactive glow of your tidal wave of humor  8)

I do all of my detailed graphic design work on MS Paint, though my version still seems to used the lead-based variety.

Mr. Foxx: I'd probably make those trees 2"-3" taller, with maybe a Kudzu Jesus (or Kudzu Oscar, or Kudzu Jedediah Springfield statue on the other side between the two staging yards).

looking  at what you have for staging yards now compared to your first idea (the slanted short tracks), are you glad we nagged you into making a narrow shelf going over the water heater?
