One way to tone down the slide switches is to paint the whole thing flat black and use a black cinder ballast shoulder.  That's good for steam and transition era, but I know I'm pushing it a bit having a cinder shoulder when I run Conrail.  Dave, if you're doing late 70s/early 80s, it could work.

That's not a bad idea, but I'm actually modeling 1983-86 for the Seaboard System years.  Or, I could just say, "F*** it," because this is just a HCD layout.   Or, I could plant the switch in the grass and paint it green.

Yeah, I suppose that's possible.  How do you secure the plastic plate to the turnout and the slide switch?  Epoxy?  'Cause not much really sticks to that plastic they mold the ties in?

I think we're narrowing it down to the final choice.  Thanks, Ed.  Now, what slide switches are you using?  Are they available locally or do I have to order from China like Lee, who apparently hates America.

I'm finally getting around to sending my old DT400 throttle back to Digitrax for replacement of the defective capacitors and an upgrade to a DT402D.  I filled out the form and wrote the check almost two weeks ago, but, with the assistance of a 9V battery, I've been testing my track installation and running trains.  I had a hard time deciding to send it back now, but I'm going on vacation, so I won't need it for a while.  Hopefully, it won't be gone that long.  I'm sure that it will be worth it, though.

Hot damn!  I just got the UPS notice from Digitrax that my repaired and upgraded throttle is being shipped.  Between that and the one Atlas Code 55 #5 turnout being shipped to me next week, I'll be back in business on the construction of the Seaboard Central.

Heck, I'd get creative with some music wire and some cheap tubing, and get the slide switches lined up along the edges of the layout.

Like Chris333, I've got to find a good source for slide switches.  Fortunately for me, I don't need the quantity that it sounds like he needs.

I've also used mini slide switches right next to the turnouts like Lee does. On those I actually filed down the switch pole so it wouldn't stick up as high. If your cork work is OK around the throw bars you could cut a tight hole into the cork and push the switch into it.


 For the under table throws I need the bigger switches.
