November 2011 issue of MR - car floats

Two articles on the use of car floats caught my eye.  I have toyed with the idea of building some functional car floats as a way of storing cars that I cannot accomodate online, in yards, on my current layout.

My thought is to make them 39" long and 5" wide.  This is totally out of scale for n-scale at 520 scale feet, but the purpose is to be able to store strings of cars on a shelf area below my layout and then move the cars onto an existing siding.

Has anyone tried this concept?  I would like to hear details.
I am thinking about using 2" extruded polystyrene as the basic material, and would attach Kato Unitrack to it.
Thanks in advance
  Sorry about my initial misuse of ferry when I meant floats.

MR also featured at least one other article and plans years ago, on a Great Lakes ferry, I believe it was a C&O boat. I know I have the article scanned in, just don't remember the details...

Do you mean car floats? A ferry would probably be self powered. A float should be about 3" wide and 1/2" tall out of the water. I used a plank of bass wood from the craft store and cut it to length.

You can see the steps I did to install a perminant one here on a switching shelf layout https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=24399.30.

I planned it for four 36' cars on each side, forgetting that I'd be using 40' and 50' cars on this layout, so I can fit only 3 on each side.
Should have made it 14" long instead of 12".

Went across the lakes on one of those C&O ferries.  Believe it was City of Ludington.  Here's a shot of them loading railcars onto the boat for the trip.  Since the boat carried cars and railcars, they are quite large.

Bob,

What's up with that tractor on the top level of that auto rack?  Doesn't look far enough off center to be off the side of the car, but it's really leaning.  Interestingly, the folks on the ground don't seem too concerned.

Hi all...I use "active" barges to transfer complete trains /w locos between Slocan City and Rosebery slips on the C&W.  It helps me move the trains from the second deck (42" height) to the fourth deck (70" height).

Interesting idea.  I haven't had any problems when I pick up the loaded barges but - just to be safe - I recently made a frame from foamboard that slips around the barges to assure cars don't roll off when they are to be lifted.

thx

On the last Puddington Valley I had a barge to move equipment on and off.... here are some really old and crappy shots...

Looks like it's got a flat.
