Forty Foot Box Car Options

Am I correct in thinking that no one currently offers a twelve panel welded forty foot boxcar with 10'-6" inside height?

Also, does Intermountain offer a forty foot diagonal panel roof for their boxcar?

Thank you,

So is the intermountain car a 10' car?  In any case it has a diagonal panel roof.

I believe all of the InterMountain models are IH 10'0" cars.  And they are the only manufacturer to offer a 12-panel 40' boxcar.

Not sure about their N offerings but they DEFINITELY have 10'6" boxcars in HO. I have a small pile of them on my shelf. They also have a diagonal panel roof, although most of their undec kits come with the rectangular panel roof. They have a 12-panel box but it's riveted.

If you just look at IMRC's website the products are right there. Yes, IMRC has two 10'6" box cars (65800-series - Modified AAR 40' Boxcar; and the 66800-series - the modified Canadian box) but, no neither is a 12-panel welded body, and neither have diagonal panel roofs. The only 12-panel they offer is 10' and a riveted-construction car (66000-series), but it does have a diagonal panel roof.

I'm thinking a fun little project would be to take one of IMRC 10'6" cars,  sand off the seams,  add new ones with archer decals, get the diagonal panel roof and paint.  So what is the prototype you're thinking of anyway?

Don't forget, it's easy to swap out ends on IMRC cars too, if you need to. Buy the kits version or throw a built-up model in the freezer for a bit and it's easy to pry apart.

Hello Andrew:

I am wanting to model a BCR work car which was converted from one of the ex-CNJ boxcars - forty foot 10'-6" IH 12 panel welded with diagonal panel roof.  Now that I am aware of the roof in N Scale, I will order one up.

The Intermountain 12 panel car is 10'-0" inside height; the Modified AAR car is closer to 10'-6" in height.  I think I will have to start with the Modified AAR car, sand off the rivet strips and find a way to simulate the new weld lines.

I think weld seams are as simple as a single x-acto score and then coming back and knocking it down just a bit (like with a finger nail).

I've done it and it looks promising, I just haven't painted one up to be sure of the final effect.

As I mentioned,  Archer Transfers makes various types of weld beads that would work perfectly for this application...and it's EASY.  I like their raised panel lines set but they also have sheets of "perfect welds" and "arc welds".

When I read your post I did not realize that Archer also offers weld beads - I have tried their rivetrs with success.  Thank you for the clarification - sounds exactly like what I will need.

I've looked at that sheet several times but wondered if the .015 (smallest) is adequate for N Scale.  I think .015 is probably too wide.

Ahhhh,   Never mind...these are just straight raised lines, not welded seams.  The welds are .015 but these straight raised lines are .005.  That could probably work.

Have you applied any Andrew?
