The knock on MR about the number of pages is getting old.  Go grab one of those 115 page issues and count the number of advertisers and compare that to a recent issue.  You'll see what you're 'missing'.

Jason
-------------------
Jason,I remember when MR was fat with advertisers and how readers would complain there was to many ads!

Now hang on to your hat..

A lot  of the missing columns was due to the reader compliants of the day and how "useless" the columns were so,MR gave in and removed the columns..

This is so true. I just got a back-order one from 2000 and in just ten years, there's about 30 less pages, but I'd say there's probably 20 less advertising pages and maybe 10 less worth of content. I noticed the increase in ads in the back-issue right away,

The two N scale mags are redundant.  Not only to each other, but to what I see here and occasionally the other forums.

Jason

Examples?  NSR has a strict policy of not duplicating online content.  N Scale Magazine doesn't have that, and does feel redundant at times, but I'd hardly say the two mags are redundant to each other?

I continue to subscribe for the following reasons:

1. Son's school sells the subscription and MR is better than buying "Kniting Now" to support is publically paid for education....(note sarcastic remark contained within)

2. I refuse to sit in the biffy with my laptop and read it on line... I have standards, as low as they might be.... :ashat:

3. I would miss being told what I need to do by Woodland Scenics and Walthers...how else would I know what products I MUST have that I don"t need.......... :RUEffinKiddingMe:

You will note that quality, content or scale was not mentioned.............
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Examples?

MiNi ModuTrak. :-X

After purging 10+ years of NSR, about all that got saved was Danneman's stuff, Rich Yourstone's weathering article and Bill Denton's FP-7 kitbash.

... I'd hardly say the two mags are redundant to each other?

Indeed! In fact, together they essentially constitute a monthly N scale magazine. The only thing redundant about them is they both cover the same scale.

Excellent dialogue...  but not sure I'm swayed in either direction.

One point to make is that my Dad still gets them so if there's something I really need to read I can always borrow his.

Or you can stop by B&N or something and just pick it there.

"Put another way, if there was a UK-Style Model Railroading magazine covering U.S. railroading, done similarly to the various guitar, gaming or other "interest" UK magazines, I would buy it every month, despite the rather painful foreign-mag upcharges.

It's the total lack of quality of U.S. magazines, MR among them, that is a large portion of their ongoing decline of readership."

Before you totally jump on that bandwagon, you might want to check out the price of those magazines.  A 12 month subscription is the equivalent of over $60 per year before the additional cost of postage to this side of the pond is added.  I like them too, and occasionally buy one at the bookstore, but they are very heavy on ads, and the price is exorbitant.

I gladly pay for Classic Trains.  My dad decided years ago to pay for my MR subscription yearly and I appreciate the gesture.  If he ever decides to stop paying for it I don't see me picking up the tab.  I would rather buy a couple of frieght cars or a passenger car or two.  I think it was this month that had a product review for an item I already owned, a little bit late if you ask me.

I dropped my subscription and havent felt the loss. Occasionally though, As I wonder through the local Giant Foods, I wander by the magazine rack and see it sitting there. I say "Ohhh..  The new edition of MR!" and I, like an Alzheimer's patient buy it, run home, lock myself in the bathroom, and open it.....Sonnnuvabitch! Why did I do that? Just more of the following:

-How to model the entire Midwest on a 4x8 sheet of plywood
-Things Pelle Soeborg can do that you never will
-Walthers!!!!!!!
-Tony Koester yammers for two pages and says nothing
-Walthers!!!!!!!
-New product announcements that are now sold out because the Internet crowed get em first.
-How to make a massive deciduous forest using over $1,000 of Woodland Scenecs stuff
-Did we mention WALTHERS!!!!!!!!
-Cody G teaches the ancient art of Atlas Snap-Track (Now with 40% more Woodland Scenics Ballast!)

So.... Is there any question?

Russ

More (inspired by Russ)

-Our editor models toy trains from Bavaria
-Can Andy ever finish his layout? (or at least ballast the rails?)
-Can you believe it's something new from Walters?
-What happened to the Jim Kelly N thing, get shot?
-Cody sniffs solvents and finds the strongest
-Pele cuts off his arm while cutting out lumber yard
-Lee shows up and demands more Laurel Valley N at the home office with
a hunting rifle.

feel free to string along....

Oh and next month we get so see advancements on Eric Brooman's
Utah Belt (a great layout) but they rush him to do stuff. A few years
ago he had out of the box Atlas phone poles and ballast sticking to
the rails. saw some of that with Doklos' Baltimore Harbor in this month.
Roadbed not ballasted in one of the pics, where the rest was.
