Great! Now we will lose how many general pages to this one scale. Something no other scale has. When will see Z, OOO, TT, British HO, OO, S, O, 7.0 mm, and the many large scales not to mention live steam? And how about the prototype? Happy or please I am not. And at a time when page count seems to be going down.

DR BRUCE DERESH from TEXAS said:
I agree with Nat Kutzman. Why is N more important than HO (for instance), which is still the predominant scale? Can we expect a new feature on each of the popular scales each month rather than just N?

WILLIAM O DAVIS from ALABAMA said:
A Model Railroader column just for N scale is a GREAT idea! Like Jim Kelly, I first saw N scale in a hobby shop window in 1960 and was hooked. When reading MR, GMR, and MRP I always gravitate to any N scale articles first. And now a monthly N scale column by an N scale enthusiast will be superb!

I am looking forward to the articles on N Scale. I my railway club is has a preference modelling in HO/OO and I now rely on building my home N scale layout which is progressing slowly.

Being a western modeler and an aspiring Tehachapi modeler, I always enjoy seeing Jim's layout in MR.
In reality, it is a difficult area and topography to really appreciate and how you can make it work in our space constrained layout rooms. Jim's approach to track planning and particularly Tunnel 10 in this regard was really eye-opening for me.

Also to be fair, it has been featured in MR over the years a lot less than what you would think - unlike David Popp and his Nagatuck, which seems to have been featured every other month in recent years. I'm not sure how much more paint your loco/caboose/box car black/red articles I need to read.....

But that is just me..... MR can not and will not be everything to everyone, especially in N scale when we have two dedicated bi-monthly magazines.

Comments like Mr.Kutzman's usually snowballs into "I agree" comments and MR usually yields to the few disgruntle readers-we seen this with several monthly columns that is no longer feature..

All to sadly Mr.Kutzman isn't the only one to see  N Scale as a inferior scale and again IMHO we need to show all sides of  N Scale not just the mega scenery with loop running....

BTW..Did you guys notice the two pictures of small N Scale switching layouts in Trackside photos?

I have to say that the "foo foo" about MR's photographic standards are a load of hooey to me. If some of the stuff I see in their mag meets the published standards for megapixels; it surely doesn't meet very high standards for composition; lighting or, in some cases, modeling......

The "Trackside photo's" section has taken a serious nose dive in terms of overall quality in this modelers opinion...

Oh, pud.  You're just saying that because someone goofed and put one of my slap-dash shots in there a year or so ago!

Pudd, if you haven't already, read MR's author's guide on photo submission.  Unleass it's changed from a few years ago, it was very involved to the point of being demotivational.  I'll look again, but at last glance it was intimidating to say the least.  More than just megapixels; it involved RGB calibration shots, etc.

I have conflicting thoughts on this.

It seems that bashing the column before reading past the typically lame intro column is like bashing that new loco without seeing it.

The value of the column will be in HOW he uses his layout to promote N, to show us the new and different, or even tried and true if it proves to be, well, the truest, etc.

That said, I can understand the general sentiment that they are bringing in a retread, and question whether a bright new face would sell them more magazines both among the faithful and the portion of those 20K attendees at WGH who are newbies, or aspire to be.

While there have been times when MR has been cutting edge, now is not one of those times, as there is no DCC, Benchwork or scenery issues to trumpet.  Bringing back Jim Kelly - as good as he may be as author and modeler - seems to highlight that.

Maybe that space in alternate months could be used to try out new authors, do opinion pieces, or just float new ideas and concepts, applicable to all scales.

Lastly, I love the fact that some HO guys don't like even one page taken up by N.....and that O scale guys don't relaize Kalmbach has given them their own magazine.

A buddy of mines layout (Dave Nenna) was in the the trackside photo's last month. The shot did not do the layout or the models justice and the photo was taken by Lou Sassi. There are better shots of his layout in his railimages album than the one that Lou chose to submit for him. Never the less, he was happy to be selected. I bet if the shot wasn't taken by Lou, it would not have made it in the magazine.

Here's their submission guidelines:

http://mrr.trains.com/en/Magazine/Contributor%20Guidelines/2010/03/Submission%20Guidelines%20-%20MODEL%20RAILROADER.aspx

Nothing too far fetched there I don't think, other than the image size is going to be huge,

I don't think they're really asking for too much, honestly, when it comes to photos. You need 300dpi for print, and while 8.5x11(*300) seems like a lot of pixels, MR is a photo heavy magazine and they understandably need the flexibility to layout articles as they need, which a page sized photo gets you.
