Weekend Update 10/24/10

It's been a busy week for me.  I made a few aquesitions.  First, I bought these babies from RDG_Rich.



And I started my MOW train with two of these guys from that auction site.  I need to find a copy of the instructions in English.  The kanji isn't exactly doing it for me.



But the real news for the night came just this morning.  I came home at about 1:15 AM to discover that one of my other hobbies decided to intrude on my railroad.  My 72 gallon freshwater fish tank sprung a slow leak, and it had drained to about two inches of water.  Surprisingly, I managed to save all the fish.  At some point, I came to the sickening realization that Altoona is stored in the room underneath.  I went downstairs and found this:



To be fair, that's what it looks like after a lot of cleanup.  The fact that the railroad is on its side right now saved it.  All of the water missed the finished parts of the layout, and the drywall plaster fell mainly on the facia.  The only scenery that took a hit was one of my signals (that I hit while trying to clean up; lucky I designed them to break away) and a few windows of the roundhouse got wet plaster in them.  All in all, it could have been a lot worse.

I got most of the Trainshed diorama complete minus all the details I want to add. Here are progress shots. The shed has not been secured down yet.

Not the commercials which bother me but all those roadside signs polluting the landscape which never seem to be taken down after elections.

I took the apt building on the right in this photo which I really liked and need a lot of (like 50 of them);

Upper deck backdrop painting for me.  Nothing like a green Spring scene to compensate for a cold grey Fall day in Calgary.  The grey scar in the landscape is the Teko pit where BC Rail used to load trains with gravel for highway projects in northern British Columbia.

I got the northeast bank of my bridge module "done," to the point that it looks like a reasonable landform (though there are a lot of details left to add):

The crew showed up for scenery play group around 1 today, and we set right to work...


Tim (Sizemore) worked on building some critical bridges.


Ed cut foam and smeared sculptamold...


Phil demonstrated his home-brew grass master static applicator.  We made a lot of progress, and got the base scenery wrapped around to the other side of the peninsula.

The sawmill at Thomas will generate lots of pulpwood and wood chips for the paper mill, as well as outbound lumber loads.

I've been reviewing my rolling stock fleet for stuff to unload.

I was looking at an old Concor TOFC flat (~50') and noticed that one one side the "sideframe" warped outward. So I disassembled the car and dipped the offending side in boiling water for a few seconds at a time and was able to "bend" it back without breaking or melting it.

I didn't do a whole lot this weekend railroad related (Navy over Notre Dame, again!!), but I did realize as I was doing benchwork for the second level last weekend, I needed to flush out my design so I did that in spurts over the course of the week (with input from Ed K.) and the weekend and think I've finally finalized it down enough that I can start doing benchwork building for it in the weeks ahead,
