This thread epitomizes why I like this forum so much.  Here are a few of my choices:

I too try to subscribe to the Yourstone school of subtlety.  Speaking of Rich, I hope he awakes from hibernation and posts some of his work.

Gary, are these all N scale? Nice work by the way!

I notice your photos have a nice 'pale' quality to them i.e. colors are understated and the subject models look like they have spent some time in the sun. I have been following your "Fading Fast" post which sheds a lot of light on the look of the model (pardon the pun), but I'm wondering if additionally your pics benefit from special attention to lighting and/or photography or some other secret sauce you are applying.

Thoughts? I'm envious of the look you are achieving!

Cheers, Steve

Thanks for the kind words Steve.  The models are all N scale. The photos were taken under a range of different conditions with an old Nikon Coolpix, but I think the common denominator is overexposure ;).  I generally edit the shots in a photo editor to tweak  the color balance and sometimes increase the white level (mostly to bring out under-frame detail).  But that's about it.

There is no substitute for lots of light in the setup.  The CP loco and BRAN stacker were taken under natural sunlight on my family room table, the boxcars were mostly taken on my workbench with a pair of Reveal bulbs (I think...) and the rest were in my basement with a bunch of 5000K daylight fluorescent bulbs.  I set the image mode to match the light, but still often need to tweak the balance afterwards.

So nothing fancy, especially compared to the results people like Chris333 and lashedup produce.  And it's always a bit of a battle.

Cheers,
Gary

P.S. I'd love to see more of your work.  You were showing some really nice cars a while back.
