Weekend Update - 10/4/2009

No modeling this week.  Lots of honeydo's.  Guess railfanning might count.  Went to St Denis this morning.  Good day for older and some unusual power.  Saw CW60C #651 - the only one in it's class painted in YN3.  Lots of SD-40's and a GP-15 in one consist.    One SD-40-2 going West on the Old Main with about 40 autoracts.  Will post photos on Thursday.

Wired the lighting circuits on a few more sections this week.  Maybe another month and I'll have one level in place WITH lighting - so I'll be able to actually SEE what I'm doing when track laying begins.  Posted a few photos of the Spencer depots on the AC&Y thread.

Went back to ATL this weekend and stopped by Trainmaster Hobbies in their new location in Buford, GA.  Great looking store and well stocked too.  A wide selection of N scale.  Has to be among the best anywhere.  A must stop if you're in the ATL area.

Caleb - You have a great eye for the flow of the land and do a great job of re-creating it in miniature.  One of the differences between a good layout and a great layout IMO.  Keep up the good work guy.

4 hobby shops in 2 days... Friday was HobbyTown for the usual disappointment, then to Iron Horse Hobbies in Reading PA, where I haven't been in over two years apparently...I was surprised to see the whole store remodeled...very nicely done. Then Yesterday I took the boy on a road trip to Manheim PA to Rule's Model Trains...Very nice store. My first time there, then swung through Lebanon to Draude's Derailment. Long story short, I picked up enough cork and flex to get started on the "Black Diamond Central"....



Golden spike was laid at 3 this afternoon on the main, and I just finished up the sidings. Many of the joiners are not soldered yet, and I still have to drop more feeders. Not too bad for a day and a half! I left a spot for the new Central Valley Bridge...

Guessing your modeling one of the Anthracite roads? Perhaps the Reading Company?

my modeling this weekend was mostly 1:1 - I built a new shed in the backyard from a Rubbermaid "kit" made entirely of recyclable plastic (with an aluminum ridge beam).  Scratch that off the honey do list!

I did manage to get abotu 6 pair of MT couplers installed on some cars.  I hadn't planned on doing it, but I found four packs of MT couplers when I was doing some cleaning.  No time like the present, so I jumped in.

Hope and prayers!  The vinyl has a sticky backing, but in order to slide it in position while still on the carrier sheet I sprayed the window/sticker with some off-brand Windex.  Unfortunantly, it was really rainy that night, so it took forever for the liquid to evaporate and the vinyl to stick to the window more than the carrier sheet... there was a lot of sliding around.  When I left at around 11pm I didn't know if everything was going to slide right off the window or not.

The fresh, supple carpet is worth the trip.  It doesn't even smell like a hobby shop anymore.

Midnightflyer, that slide fence is amazing! Absolutely incredible modeling, especially avoiding the "too perfect" trap for pole alignment.

Seconded. EZ line maybe? looks great.

After looking at proto photos of the track I'm modeling, I realized the tan/dirt colored ballast I used on the spur was not realistic. There seemed to be more of a grimy, cinders like ballast mixed with dirt and grey rock ballast. So here is the redone spur...
