6.5mm Silflor Grass, Track, and concrete

A bunch of recent experiments are coming together.  The prototype area has more grass in between the rails, but the tracks aren't used anymore.  I wanted the grass, so I compromised.

(After I saw this photo I added more ballast).

the ballast is too white for crap trak .. hit it with some grime .. weather wash

Agreed on the ballast, it looks transparent and doesn't have the sharp edges that ballast should.  Also, the rocks floating in the grass are a little interesting.   ;)

The ballast definitely looks too fresh, not to mention too "there". 



I imagine you're going for this kind of look, only two years after the last train.  I don't think you'd have much ballast on top of the ties, and what ballast there was would be sunken into the cinders and mud.

I will 'pile on' about the look of the ballast.

Color and placement could be improved to get the high standard you are working towards.

I agree, less ballast and more mud.  Remove the ballast from on top of the ties and what's piled up beside the track (besides it's somewhat hiding what I believe are the most realistic looking rails I've ever seen), and that will probably leave you with just the right amount with which to expose those nice looking ties and to blend in some mud and whatever else oozes up from between the ties over time.

Still have no clue where your modeling. lol I would use some cinder type material, or you could use some fine dust/rock material. I found mine right in my alley.

The ballast you're using seems a tad too coarse. If you can go for a smaller grade.
