Ground Goop: Alternitive to the Formula?

I was curious if there was a modified formula to the ground goop idea. I wanted to eliminate the perm-a-scene, and the lysol. Possible?

Why not use Sculptamold and then paint or Sculptamold with paint in it?



Sculptamold is easy to mix, easy to apply, leaves a nicely textured surface.

Did you smooth that with some water or just let it how you applied it?

My recommendation would be for Sculptamold. Just add paint or powdered dye. I've been using it for years. This is not smoothed with anything--just spread on with a spatula.





When you smooth it, you can make nice dirt roads. I just use my fingers.

Okay, thanx. I built a hill with sculptamold on top of some chicken wire, with plaster wrap sandwhiched in between. I smoothed it with my hand and some water. I do like the rough texture of it just applied, and not "smoothed."

I use foam for the basic forms, then smear on a coat of Sculptamold that's colored with cheap craft acrylic paints.  It stretches the material a lot farther.  Chicken wire and screen tend to need more to cover.

I mixed it per the instructions (the consistency of "cottage cheese") and then applied it with a putty knife.

I was initially concerned with it being too "textured" and perhaps I should have used my fingers & water to smooth it out even more, but (I'm modeling the northeast, so I'm not looking to create hills that are more "cut" like one would find out west) after everything dried and I applied ground foam everything worked out just fine...

I have been using a 50/50 mix of fine vermiculite and plaster of paris with a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to ******** setting. Into this I dribble some burnt umber paint tint to give it color if there is a chip. I don't sweat the color too much, it gets painted and textured. I mix up 2 cups of mixture at a time.

This is a picture of a section done this way after I painted it with some latex "ground color" paint. The ground texture near the bottom of the hill was the start of experimenting with color for that.

Here is what I use on mine:

1 cup Sculptamold
1 cup Elmers Glue
1 cup Brown paint
1 cup fine Vermiculite

I apply it with several different sized artists knives that I have.
