There ya go, that was my next suggestion that your check that out, make it CSX, CRR, Family Lines, Chessie, NS whatever...Add a lineside customer for some covered hopper/boxcar traffic and a fuel dealer for 1 or 2 tankcars and a bunch of coal hoppers and have a blast...

yeah, I don't know what to do at this time, but I may be able to go larger than a door layout, at the largest a 6x10ft layout.

pull the trigger - i have been waffling for 3 years now.  go for the Clinch - that would be fun.\

find a PRR branch line that has some switching and a tunnel and you are all set... i wouold not try to put a heavy mainline on a door - ask Dave about staging.

Staging is being added now in the form of an additional door...  Started tracklaying "Enola" yard this weekend.  But yes, just ONE door is fine for scenery and loop-de-loop, but is terribly frustrating to do much more with.

not to sound rude, but i'm curious how old you are... when i was in my early teens, i was rocking the 4x8 in HO scale honing my skills.  if that's the case, i say get a door, lay some track and start having fun.  i would advise against locking yourself into a prototype and just enjoy running trains and building scenery.

ok, just got caught up on the intros and saw your age.  i'd say go with a door and go from there.  the goal at this point should be to have fun and not worry about building a railroad in your basement, but building a foundation of skills that will prove inmportant as your progress in the hobby.

This is what I did with my first door layout.  It was built only to be a testbed for foam layout construction, scenery techniques, etc.  I really enjoyed building it and was proud enough of it that I gave it away instead of trashing it.  The great thing about a door layout, other than portability, is that you can hone your skills but also have something to enjoy that doesn't have to be that expensive while you plan the dream layout.

How about Hagerstown, Maryland? --Western Maryland, Norfolk and Western, Reading, and Baltimore and Ohio, along with Chesapeake and Ohio and Chessie if you pick that era.  Not to mention a lot of mixed lashups, especially in the mid sixties and early seventies.  (Selfish reason--would like to see what somebody could do with that on a door.

Heh.  I've been planning a layout for, quite literally, as long as you've been alive.  Still not actually built anything.  Although I have recently built a series of modules to build upon.  My problem now is that I keep thinking that I'm not gonna like some aspect of the trackplan, which is of course inevitable as nothing is perfect, but I'm having a hard time overcoming it and actually laying some track.

Liked the brain thing Lee. lol. Maybe I'll model something to everyone's liking. Just an eastern layout theme. Model my freelanced railroad, Chessie, B&O, NS, CSX, PRR, Conrail, and Western Maryland.
