In Praise of the Bachmann 44 Tonner

I noticed that MBK had some in stock, so I got one for $60.  Bachmann did an outstanding job on these on all fronts:  handrails look good, pre-installed decoder, runs smoothly and slowly, good mechanical design and QC.

So, let's give Bachmann a round of applause for pulling the 44 tonner off and for keeping a great price!

Seconded.

I got one in PRR because, well, I'm not really sure why.

I think I may get another in another paint scheme. Maybe the red one?

They're really nice. I was just running mine around again last night. 15 cars, no problems. Insane!

A real winner for sure..... runs like a champ, looks good and gives you a ton of bashing potential.... and you can afford one or two, or more...

Bachmann hits a home run with the bases loaded late in the game !
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Plenty of bashing potential? The only thing I see is the hood width... ;)

All kidding aside. Here it is blowing my mind:

The video quality sucks, but that's it efforlessly (if quickly) pulling 12 cars around my layout and its spotty track.

I just might get one sometime next year when the price drops as I can't afford one now (I have no reason to get one, but they are cool). 8)

I have no reason to get one either, but who needs a reason? Mine is (supposedly) on its way to me, and I am eager to try it out. I will use it for my fictional short line. I have a postal scale, and if no one reports sooner, I will weigh it and let you all know. I'm guessing it must be close to an Atlas RS1, since reported pulling power seems to be about equal.

I've now got 2 of them.  My red one seems to pull about 1/3 more cars than the PRR one I've got.  Ain't complaining, they are great little locos.  I swore at one time not to ever buy another Bachmann but these are great.

Sure Ed; the guts have already been the topic of Randy's 70 tonner project and I want to figure a way to make a CPR DTC 2 out of it. Those, plus the 100's of localized modification one could model seem to me to a basher's delight....Unless you ment can I make a toaster out of it... and then I can't really help you.... ;)

Must be all the lead in the red paint!   ;)

If these weigh only 1.2 ounces, how can they pull 10 cars? What's the secret?

I think they just got lucky with all 4 wheels driven, the short wheelbase, and secret Bach-man anticipation dust sprinkled on each one. If you scrap the circuit board and put a decoder in the cab (if you do DCC) there is a lot of room for more weight.
