There are all kinds of variations for RPO cars both heavyweight and lightweight. I was supprized at all the variations in just SP & UP Harriman RPO cars when I purchased the giant Book from the SP Techinical & Historical Society "Southern Pacific Passenger Equipment Volume 3 Head End Cars". Cars rabging from shorty 60 ft. straight RPO cars to 80 ft. RPO Baggage cars, cars with short small RPO Apartments as the sorting space was called and the rest of the space devoted to baggage, or in a few cases coach space. There have only been a couple of heavyweight RPO cars done in N that I know of so thus the high demand. Rivarossi never did one in N like they did in HO. Pecos River Brass did a Santa Fe Prototype in two versions, one with a roof top skylight over the RPO compartment, fairly common and one without. Aside from the Santa Fe style underframe this car was generic enough to be used for other roads. Wheels of time did a kit for an SP Harriman RPO Baggage car. Lastly we now have the KATO Modernized PRR Broadway LTD heavyweight RPO but this comes only in train sets.Nate Goodman (Nato).

The upside could be that some good cores can be had for M&R's Santa Fe types...

First releases, October:

140.00.010  Great Northern #35; pullman green, black roof. $19.35
140.00.020  New Haven #3280; pullman green, black roof.  $20.15

NYNH&H car has extra roof hardware, which might explain the higher MSRP.

I'm really out of my element on passenger equipment...
Could anyone tell me if these are "in the ballpark" for either the Erie or B&O/BR&P, & if so- about when & where?
My main interest is western PA. in the "20's/30's...
Thanks,
JimR.

I'll have to get two.  One as a pretty decent stand-in and another to butcher later on.  That just leaves a C&O combine and I'll my entire train (all three cars  ;)).

How do the windows on the MTL model compare to the NYNH&H version Bryan?

The model is a stand-in.  The doors are correct, but that series of NH cars (3263-3284) had four windows at one end and none at the other (rather than the three-three arrangement that the model has).  MTL also used the short-lived 1913 deco scheme (NYNH&H spelled out across the letterboard) instead of the NEW HAVEN which would have been appropriate into the 1960s.

I'm happier to see the model in general rather than the NH release specifically.  I already had assumed that some etched brass sides would be needed to make the model more prototypical to the NH, so that was in the back of my head for a future project someday.  I have a PRB ATSF RPO repainted and standing in as one of the RPOs acquired from MEC ... timeline-wise I'm stretching it since the MEC cars weren't received until the 1960s, but that isn't apparent when the consist is moving.

I'm not complaining though.  MTL has given NH good representation over the years, especially in recent times.  And as I've stated before - as long as a good portion of the model is correct for my prototypes, I don't mind kitbashing the remainder to get the model as prototypical as possible.

Also, in the Micro-News, they got the informational blurbs reversed on the two cars.  The NH car was built by Laconia in 1913 and the GN car by P-S in 1918, rather than the reverse.

We'll scratch my previous semi-enthusiasm as Micro-trains has pulled a bit of a bait-and-switch with the window arrangements.  I know there were no promises made, but why show one car for four months and then produce something else?

Are you sure that we are just not seeing the other side of the car this time? I've only seen one picture, from one side. Maybe this is the other side of the car.....

or

Maybe they changed it to reflect the fact that I don't think anybody came up with actual pictures of the car with the 3 - 3 window arrangement. Most were built with windows on only one end or with a 1 - 5 or 2 - 4 configuration.

Just guessing out loud.

Anyway I was going to wait if they were 3 - 3 until the other window arrangements arrived. The B&O used 5 - 0 and 6 - 0 arrangements and cutting out extra windows was worth the wait. I can make a 4 - 0 foobie and be happy.

BTW - the updated car is on the MT site...

If it was the other side of the car, the catcher would be at the other end, right?

Here's the MT pic.

It is the same car.  Different window arrangement on each side.
