... If you want to effect change do what Ed did and send the manufacturers emails. You stand a far better chance of making a difference than posting on a forum.
Difficult to do when you don't see photos or samples of new tooling until it is about to hit the market.

Or even worse, the first time you see it is when they're all on their way to retailers...

Respectfully, this is a bogus argument. Right is right and wrong is, well, wrong. There is enough documentationand prototype references on this particular project for them to have gotten it right from the start. It would have taken with no more effort than it took Overland to do back in the day, or Athearn (which is coming later this year, and will be correct!)

Personally, I'd rather not spend my $30 on near enough, because the model is not 'near enough' to the prototype...

Donnell

Not necessarily, it depends how many more you sell when it's right, vs near enough. Additional costs of going out an measuring or whatever need to be amortised over the whole run, and if you won't sell significantly more by being more prototypical it's wasted time and money, both of which could be used to make the next model.

All I can say is I will not be in for the Micro-Trains version (and I do mean literally their version!!!) I will be getting the Athearn one.
The ride height on this thing is just plane flat out rediculous!!!!! I used to by MT's fairly regularly but I purchased only 1 (the new
Penn Central 60' boxcar) in the last several months. Mainly because I'm tired of having to lower everything!! I do like alot of their
boxcars however and the intermodal flats and a few others which are well worth the effort of lowering.

Not too much pressure on Athearn to hit one out of the park eh ?   ;D
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I was able to place the MTL and the Athearn next to each other at Springfield. Athearn is the one I would buy if I were to shell out the money. Besides, the Athearn has a full complete brake system. I was impressed that the under-car detail rivaled brass. This Atlas thread had pics of the underside.

Yeah, but the whining about the FVM boxcar revolves around the end relief, of which the manufacturer posted prototypical photos to back up the model.

Might want to go back and look at all the prototype photos posted... the argument used for that car was the ends were compromised for 'artistic reasons', whatever that's supposed to mean... a stamped steel end is pressed between two dies, a 57 degree angle is a 57 degree angle... regardless of scale.

Don't discount the non-serious modelers in the scale. Ever.

Maybe non-serious modeller isn't the correct term. More like absolute moron's.

I would hate to think that MTL would become a poart of pop-culture where everybody has to have the first car just to say they have one........but then again I remember what the first state car went for on ebay. I know I sold mine on ebay for $129 and I knew that was insane and then some were hitting them for $300. Can't blame MTL for doing things that make them money...or me money on that car. But then maybe they discovered long ago that there is a sucker born every minute and we're the idiots for demanding prototypical accuracy like it actually means something in the whole scheme of things.

Maybe the meaning of life isn't he who dies with the most toys wins, but he who sells the most toys to moron's with money wins.

Anyway it's late and the post operating session Waffle House food is causing these terrible thoughts.

Wow, that's a great way to get people to "look closer", and want to model more prototypically. Just call them a "Moron".

That'll go a LONG way

I don't think non-serious absolute mornons are even modellers. I don't know too many if any modeller's out there willing to spend 3 times MSRP on a freight car. No, IMO these are collectors who just have to ahve the first car of a new body style. Let 'em have it, they'll never get what they paid for it, but I'm glad for th guys that actually sold and got that kind of money.

If I remember correctly Rob - Matt posted photos of a version of the car that showed the model was at best accurate and at worst inconclusive, but that is a discussion for another thread.  My point is that the FVM ribbed boxcar situation is in no way comparable to the MTL bay window situation.

The twenty+ other photos I found that showed otherwise settled it for me.

Maybe someone can find one photo that make the proto SP caboose look taller so we can call the MT one good.  :P

Here's today's latest "BIN" listing. It'll be interesting what these "top out" for to all the "Morons" that asarge knows.

Got mine today from Lou (thanks again) and it's a darn nice model. I'll eventually lower it a bit and she'll just be fine for me (I'm a semi-moron) ;D

So I decided to lower it even more:

I also made the toolbox shorter.
