AC4400CW vs. c44-9w

Is there any external difference?  I have a Kato Ho scale c44-9w that I would like to paint to match an AC4400CW, would I be way off base if I did so?

Yeah, but SP still had the C44-9W's and they ran on the Golden State Route.....

Thom, there is a visual difference between a C44-9W and a AC4400CW. The AC4400 has a bigger cabinet for inverters. Note that CSX AC power engines have a lightning bolt.

I noticed that the trucks are different on the 2 photos.

Bob, its a option. The CSX has steerable trucks.

Other than the inverter cabinet, it depends on how accurate you want.   There are a number of variations in the side panels, grilles, fuel tank, hi/low ditch lights, and trucks not only between the C44-9W and AC4400CW, but also between the production phases of each.  There are of course also variations by roadname.

Is yours the older Kato C44-9W?  The older Kato represents an early Dash-9 (CNW & ATSF prototypes) with the low ditch lights and earlier trucks.

Is this for SP?   IIRC the paint schemes for SP Dash-9 and AC44 were pretty close.  (Note the spacings on the "SP" on the front of the cab.)

(BTW, if you're re-painting, consider the A-Line see-thru steps -- they are easy to add and really improve the look   :) )

No, they're definately not.

See the pics in ednadolski's post above.

The 8165 and 8183 are C44-9Ws while the 124 and 154 are AC4400CWs.
The most notable difference is the large inverter cabinet behind the cab on the conductor's side on the AC4400CW, while the "-9" just has a much smaller air conditioner unit. Note also that the air intakes along the top of the carbody behind the cab (on both sides) are different between the two models.

guess i should have added a bunch of these  ;D ;D ;D ;D

i helped bring these to market when i was at MTH - i know the differences, i was told by a superior that they were the same externally, regardless of the various external differences...  thank god we were able to convince them to do multi part tooling with swappable slides...  saved a ton and added another loco for the catalog at a crazy cheap price.  of course the superior took the credit.

the rear panel door size and configuration on the engineer's side are different and some are different on different phases.  i spent way too much time on this about a decade ago.  i dislike GE locos.  not that the EMD's are not without phase issues.

GE is Six Sigma for every model different  ;)

Wait till you get to GEVO phases...
