Weekend Update - 9-14-2008

Found some decals for a Sherman tank I've had for awhile.  So I decaled the tank and placed it on a flatcar.  Besides gave me an excuse to try out a new 50mm micro lens I just bought.  I got a lot of learning in using this lens.

Very nice Bob.....I did something similar years ago - harder to find Canadian tank decals...come to think of it, harder to find a Canadian tank.......LOL



A tried and true Leopard 2..... The Lord Strathcona Regiment..... go get em boys !

You can't do it from that new grapevine album , railimages is ok though , but picasa is far better .

Just a boxcar this week:



This is an Atlas Trainman car that can be had for < $10 (great car for the price!) so I decided to try out a bunch of ideas on it.  First some graffiti decals, then a zinc-based fade (see the Fading Fast thread in the weathering section for more), then I kind of went over the top rusting the roof (more than I intended to), but I think I found a recipe I can live with (each panel was done slightly differently to see how things work).

This shot gives a sense of the fade: the old LBF car on the left was roughly the original color of the Atlas car (I think...):



This zinc paint can really impart a nice bleached feel if you're persistent (lots of fine coats in succession).  Too bad I didn't put wire grabs on this guy.  Oh well - ain't gonna happen now.

Thanks, glad you like the image. The scene is shaping up, although I obviously still need to weather the engines and get a background in place (I tried adding a sky with Photoshop - was too tedious with the wall and windows behind the scene - need to shoot it against a plain blue background - much easier to add the sky at that point.)

Mill building is a preproduction sample of a kit from Alkem Scale Models.

Trees (a whole butt load of 'em) are Super Trees by Scenic Express.

Layout is about 4 x 8 feet.

The layout has shaped up nicely!  Thanks for sharing the picture in advance of your book.  I especially like the trees, not only for the effectiveness of the branch structure and foliage, but also on the height that you chose.  You must have been paying attention to the Interactive Scenery Clinic on Trees.    Outstanding!

Nothing here. Spent most of the weekend doing carpentry on yet another household project ...

Did manage to spend a few minutes in the train room, and finally located that undec Kato mid-production SD40-2 shell I've been looking for.  :
