The "bowl" of the yard is the storage/classification tracks...
20" seems like it should be okay... but by putting the yard there, you'll be pushing your branchline to the edge, where if it's at the front, the branch has some more elbow room, and some available real estate for switching. That would help distract the eye from the loop track running along the bottom edge of the branch line hill...
