PRR X46A

I've almost always just used "close enough" cars for custom repaints, so this something a little new to me. It's not on the same order of the HO kitbashes where everything is perfect but for N scale it's a good compromise, and makes for a unique looking car.

So I started by looking through boxes for a car with the angled roof panels and 3+R/4 dreadnaught ends that Altoona and Hollidaysburg were so fond of. Here's where the guys in HO really have it made. Turns out the only car that works for this in N is the Deluxe Innovations 40' AAR boxcar. It's going to be a bit of a challenge to do a 50' car with these later, but this 40-footer was pretty easy.

This shot before getting paint shows the changes. A new door and sill were made from Evergreen styrene. bolsters were milled down, Precision Scale brake gear was added, and some stirups from the parts box. MT trucks, Z scale couplers, and FVM wheels finish it out:

Here is a comparison shot with a stock DI car. The door and sill make a pretty dramatic change:

And here is a proto shot from Fallen Flags:

Out-stand-ing! I have always liked DI's etched roofwalk, and here it really gets to shine.

I'm not getting your photos.  Had the dreaded X's and they went away.

If you're using AoL, FileAve gets blocked - not much I can do about that.

Rich, Is this a new (recent) car or the one we saw a while back?   Err, wait the car I'm thinking of was from a Atlas car right? Remember the one of The Railwire monthly challenges.

That was an X54 and I sold it. The Conrail era data paintouts were a little too far out of era for me. I'm probably going to focus on late PRR / early PC for the next layout (67-68). I've done 50's PRR and late-era PC before, so this will be something a little different.

Hi Rich:

Very nice work.  Would you be willing to send this is as a brief article for the Keystone Modeler?  I would like to see more N scale kitbashing articles.

The Keystone Modeler is a free online magazine on PRR modeling published by the PRRT&HS.  See:  http://www.prrths.com/Keystone%20Modeler/Keystone_Modeler.htm

Thanks,
Doug Nelson

Great project!  The paint and weathering are top-notch as usual.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Doug, good to see you here. TKM is one of my favorite magazines. Even though most of the content is HO, there's some hardcore modeling info there that carries over to any scale. Are you on the editorial staff? I could probably put an article together.

Rich:

It is mostly HO because thats what they are getting for submissions.  I have had a couple of articles in TKM.  They are always looking for content and I think that they would welcome an N scale article.

Doug.

Rich, if you still have the original 6' doors, I need one to replace one that fell off an Intermountain car...Name your price! ;D
