Love 'em.

One of my favorite night photos is one that I took of Rondout last year:

This is as close as I ever got... it was a staged shot set up by Dwight Jones at the 1991 or 2 WMRHS convention in Union Bridge...  I had no idea what I was doing, used a Sears (Pentax) body with a semi-automatic setting.  I think I did something stupid like hold my thumb over the light meter so I'd get a longer exposure...

I had to touch up the scan you see here... it got plaster spattered on it during a night of feverish scenery work...

(yes it WAS plaster... get your mind out of the gutter...)

Great shots, Russ...  Really captures the motion in a dramatic fashion.

I haven't shot a moving night shot in 9 years.

However I love to shoot stills in B&W..... and oddly I find myself shooting alot of B&W even in the daytime now.

I WANNA SEE THE BOAT MOVIE!

I tried once:

Next time, set the ISO to 50 to reduce all that noise.  You may also have to fool with the exposure to get a good balance.

Night shots work best at twilight, when there is a little bit of light left in the sky to act as a giant fill light.

I would advise against that when doing night shots, as the noise is going to be more apparent in a night shot than anything taken in daylight. You said you have the remote, so I'd just set the ISO nice and low and do a "bulb" exposure for as long as you have to. Your light meter won't work with the bulb exposure, so be sure to do some test shots to see what exposure time will work best before the train shows up.

Thanks. Good advise.
Been running the ISO at 100 (default for my nikon) and the few times I have been out have tinkered with the exposure time.

Caught a short container run tonight. Had to run to get into position and then barely had a moment to set up.

Stuck around for the FOUR HOUR late Amtrak from Chicago.
