Any tips on spraying 'Future'

I want to try Future as an alternative to my normal acrylic gloss to see if I can get a better finish for decalling.  Does anyone have any experience that could speek to whether or not there is anything special I need to do to spray it?

It's really thin, so the only thing you really have to worry about is having it run.  It certainly doesn't need to be thinned before spraying though, which is nice.

I've been looking for Future all over, Wal-Mart, Giants and so on but I've not been able to find it anyplace.  Does anyone know where I may find it?  I thought at first I would only buy one of those sample sizes but now I would be glad to find any size available.

I had a hard time finding it, too.  I ended up biting the bullet and buying it off of Amazon - forever skewing the assortment of products they recommend to me via email.

So should I use a smaller needle?  I use a Paasche and of course the large needle for spraying normal acrylic paint.

So medium, small?

Can I do multiple coats in the same paint session or I'm I going to have to wait longer than the normal 10-15 between coats?

I would wait about 2 minutes between very light coats.

Just a couple of minutes between light coats. Goes on easy and gets tacky pretty quickly when you spray it.

You can mix in the Tamiya flat base to make a dull finish version. 3:1 Future : flat base is about the highest ratio you can use that works. Doesn't work as a brushed medium. The self leveling feature of the Future will cause it to end up smoothing over the material of the flat base and you'll still be glossy.

I've never had any trouble finding Future in the big box store. Just look for floor cleaning products, you should find it right there.

They've changed the name, recently. I forget what they're calling it now, (I'm thinking Pledge) but it's been subtitled "With Future shine." It's the same old Future, just a different name.

I did see something at Wal-Mart that said "With Future Shine" and thought it was may be just a knock-off that was trying to sound like it was Future like store brands try to look like the real products.
Have you used the new product and know it works as well as future?

I haven't personally, but model builders on another forum I'm on have tried it. They report it's the same stuff, in new packaging.

I've had mixed results with Future.  Sometimes it goes on great, but other times I get a nasty "orange peel" finish with it.  Lately, I have switched to Liquitex Gloss Varnish, which works much better for me.  I know that Future dries very quickly, which is probably what gives me trouble when airbrushing it.

Frank,
Do you airbrush the gloss Varnish on or brush it on?

Like all acrylics, it has excellent leveling properties, but needs to go on wet.

You always read the advice that several light coats are better than one heavy coat, but I'm sure this harkens back to the days of paints that caused cancer.  Regular old Floquil works well in several light coats.  But as soon as you try to mist on a light coat of fast drying acrylic, you'll get orange peel city.

Same with Future.  You need it to go on in a single wet layer.  If you see individual drops, then you're hosed.

But, that's where the problem comes in as well, Future is very thin, so there's a fine line between "wet" and "running everywhere".   If you do get a run, use just air to run it off the side or bottom of the model right away.

Mike, thanks for the reply.  Indeed, old habits are hard to break!  I've considered adding some retarder to the Future to give me a little more room for error.

Dave, I use my Paasche airbrush to spray the gloss.  I have brushed Future with decent results, but details like rivets tend to cause bubbles when brushing.
