Fisrt project - Swift reefer

Here is my first weathering project ever. 

Here are some specs:

Bachman model number 43-1009-53 (new model number 17936)

First washed car body with alcohol and then washed the entire car with black acrylic alcohol wash.  This removed the Red “Swift’s Premium logo as well as most lettering on the sides.  Barn red color on ends washed off as well.
I know I have the wash to dark and will do better next time to have it lighter color.  I was impressed how easy the decals came off with the alcohol.  I didn't plan on the decals being completely removed but now it's going to be easier to have the model look like the proto I have pronted. The lettering on the photo is completely removed.

Nice work so far, but the car would be shopped for unreadable reporting marks on one side. The initials and number would be stencilled on, not necessarily in black on silver, either. Adding restencilled reporting marks is an interesting detail not modeled as often as it occurs on the prototype.

After I get a few layers of rust on I had planned on putting the reporting numbers back.

Step 2 I applied pastels to the one side and I noticed when I put dulcoat on the colors changed a little.  I have 6 new shots and would love to hear what anyone thinks.  Remember this is the first time I ever painted like this.

I am no expert here, but id looks like the washes just kind of ran on you .. it might look ok from a distance, but the closeups are killers ..

Of course, my efforts in the past look pretty similar .. so ..

Dave,

Good choice of colors but the streaking effects look a little too wispy.  I think that you'll find that on the prototype, streaking is fairly straight down (usually).

Thanks for the feedback it helps to hear what others think or see.  I need to learn more on how to control the paints when I'm doing the washes.  I also noticed the color of the pastels changed when I sprayed the Dulcoat on the car.

I find if you dullcoat the model first the washes are easier to control (allot less beading)

Tom - I figured out what you are talking about and have found how to get it better.  The key is to have my paint less runny and paint the streaks on, not have the wet paint run down the side of the car.  I also wanted to let you know what paint/ colors I’m using since they are such good colors and not what you suggested.  I have paint left over from military model building and I’ve used that paint.  I have 2 colors I’ve used for the “rust” streaking down the sides. It’s from a paint I got in the LHS from “Model Master”, acrylic paints.  I’ve used colors rust #4675 and leather #4674.  They come in 1/5 oz bottle and I find they are good colors and easy to work with.

Here's what I've got done on this refeer.  Please give me some feedback.  What needs to be done to have this car running (even if it looks like it never would run again).
