There she is...  I ditched the Life Like GP-20 frame.  Too light and too loose under the Atlas shell.  Added an Atlas Classic drive with DCC hacked into it.  Much better now!

Is the Atlas frame really that much heavier?
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

I think the problem with the Life Like frame is two fold.  It is lighter, because there's less of it there.  The Atlas frame has more meat above and behind the motor.  Even after milling it out, there's a lot still there.  The other problem is I believe the LifeLike frame is a hair narrower, so the shell wants to vibrate more, creating extra noise.  My GP-9 chopper rides on a Life Like frame still, I'll have to do some side by side comparisons.

I did two GP-20's for the Laurel Valley, same cuts, same decoders, but the stock shells, and they run like champs.

Interesting report -- the chop-nose looks great.  I have 5 LL units, bought during the Model Expo fire sale.  I was planning to put Atlas shells on them.  I dry-fit, but like you say -- they're just a hair loose.

I'm thinking that a piece of electrical tape on each side of the frame may work.  Now if Atlas would re-stock some Phase II GP-9 shells in their parts system...

She looks like a cyclops with that single windshield and looks almost naked with nothing on the cab front above the window.

But that's not your fault.  :)

/used to looking at CN and CP GP9Rm and GP9u and (ex-CP) RS18u engines that have double front windows and numberboards, class lights and bells on the front of the cab.

WM chopped their own at Hagerstown starting in '64.  They did pretty much what I did...  Cut a couple feet out from the bottom of the short hood and drop the whole mess, number boards, headlights and all.

It's a little tricky to get the headlight to work, but not impossible.

As long as they had the BL-2's on the roster, these would never be the ugliest members of the fleet!
