Looks good Tom.  Did you wipe the base coat off the raised ribbing and bracing, paint the base coat around those details, or paint the silver highlights?  It seems to scale out well as far as texture goes.

Tom,

This is probably my favorite boxcar of yours yet, nice & subtle!

Its amazing how much better N scale boxcars look when you paint over the attempts of overspray (especially Athearn).

You've convinced me to give SF' a try!

Still refining the process, first attempt and will post second attempt. It looked to refined, I brushed off this attempt and re-did it - trying to get a more scattered rust effect - Any pointers.

ACF is looking better, here's the salt effect on a 50' Refer. Paintd primer rust, salted and then second color. SF treatment on the roof.

Trucks are pained rust and grimy black - Going detail and decal for a private road. Tom thanks for inspiration.

Looks good so far Chuck.  Now, apply a wash of burnt sienna, let it dry, and then another wash of burnt umber.  The paint will catch into the rust indentations and make streaking easy.

Gotcha, after work tonight I'll do that, can I use water based or do you prefer oil based for better streaking? - Should I come back with dabs of the green final paint to stop the "chicken pox" effect from appying too much salt. The first test I applied just a dusting of salt - There wasn't enough effect.

Either.  I've been using oils recently due to the longer drying time (needed for the bigger HO surface area).

When I started, I would sprinkle on salt willy-nilly.  Now, I use a brush to brush it around to look more meaningful.

Gonna do that on next project, make sure the rust follows a purpose and that's usually along the ribs and braces. Do you think I can dab some more of the final paint as a hole cover on this one do stop it from looking like a "pizza face kid"?

Sure, I've done that too.
