Since I've got some new ones, these are from A-Town this past weekend:

Nothing exciting from me. I went out back in the woods to take some pics of the old tin mill to match up with a builders photo of an Erie flatcar from 1940.
Between the nearby steel mill and the tin mill ran a steam pipe. At the B&O and Erie track the pipe goes over them and well I just had to get a pic:
I'm over the B&O and looking at the part that crosses the Erie (nothing but a roadbed with 4 wheeler tracks now)
This is the old B&O (CSX) it is a dead end now and they only use this small area to work the steel mill. At one time this was the 3 foot gauge Painesville & Youngstown. Found an old signal that could have been a semaphore at one time.
I can see my place from this pipe bridge and after 8 years I finally know what it looks like from up there
Also found this that was taken in the same area, the old trolley roadbed is actually closer to me than the Erie.

A link to a shot of a CN mid-train DPU on the Kingston Sub at Lovekin (Newcastle), Ontario. I've been trying to get a shot of the DPU's since January, which has proven most difficult since CN is "testing" them and they operate infrequently. I was out for a drive with the GF, knew he was coming since I had the scanner on ;D, and thought I'd what the heck, bad lighting be damned. Glad I bring the camera on these little drives.
The plan is to use them on manifest freights to improve train handling. These trains operate out of various origins in Quebec and run to Toronto. This is not mountainous territory, but these are monster freights. For example, I whitnessed a train #305 break two couplers in the same area as the photo the previous day... 47th from the front and 2nd from the rear. This 305 was approximately 160 cars, 11,000 feet, 16,000 tons (gleaned from the crew).

Had a business trip to cincinnati and on the return trip (drove in at night) I had the chance to railfan a bit.
The only worthy thing I caught in cinci was a NS road railer (I'm still not sure if I like these, but I can appreciate the ROI they give the RR)
Dayton had much more action (I was just looking for rail or heavy industry as I drove, I forgot to pre-scout on the internet)
I dont photo engines much but I love SD40-2s
same NS yard
Caught a train sitting, I have many more of these 2 cars in high res if anyone wants them.
This is for the slayer fan
In lima I caught a NS crew change with ex-conrail power, it was WAY too dark to shoot but I tried my cameras 'night setting'. I really need a good SLR so I can at least try to push in a setitng like this.
Cheers

Some third rail (750v DC) action in honour of our thread patron......
All images taken in July 2004 at Guildford in the south of England. The slam-door units in the first two pics
have since been withdrawn from service.

Slam door? Is there a story there?

Slam door? Is there a story there?
The doors opened outwards. They had a heavy duty spring locks, that took a bit of effort to open from the inside. To ensure they closed they had to be 'slammed' shut or vigorously pulled shut from inside.
I grew up in the southern England to the sound of slam, slam, slam as every train arrived at a station, passengers got out and slammed the door shut behind them.
For a number of reasons they have been gradually phased out, the main one being that there were reportedly a relatively small number of instances of people falling from moving trains. IMHO in most if not all cases these were suicides.
There were other safety issues. There were occasions when someone forgot to slame the door before the train departed and the train guard and/or platform staff (the latter of whom were also being rapidly phased out) were asleep on the job.
All a bit nanny state really.
