I remember reading in one of the CRHS publications (in Vito's, incidently), that CR painted it's scale test car hardware so that it was immediately evident if anything had been changed out, and would change the known weight of the car.
Maybe UP did the same thing?
That would make sense, as the grey coupler definitely isn't the result of overspray, since the neighboring parts of the car are yellow.
