In this case

the missing cab vent is way, way, way more noticeable than the missing sight glass on the LL 38-2s.

Care to comment, Ed?

Lol, yeah.

The cab vent was not a standard feature. It was a Conrail specific addition (like the cab signal box and sinclair radio antennas), and one I'm not adverse to adding.

The sight glass, on the other hand, was standard equipment on ALL GP38-2s.

Yeah, bummer about that. I was really looking forward to it.

But yeah, the goal now is to get them weathered and detailed up by Timonium.

Yes, it's more noticeable than the missing sight glass. However, EVERY SINGLE GP38-2 produced had that sight glass. Not every GP38-2 came from the factory with the cab vent. So If you want to make a generic GP38-2 model, the sight glass MUST be present. The cab vent is just a road-specific detail.

Ok for some reason Atlas has decided not to put the bell on the high hood like they have for all the other EMD units, even if it was on the wrong side for SOU units.  I know the B23-7 was missing the bell already but its a detail on the high hood that has (I think) more of a purpose than on the low nose stock model.
With the GP38-2 I was in high hopes that Atlas would have put the bell on the long hood to match SOU fleet of 254 GP38-2's. But that is how it goes.
I am having a hard time finding the SOU/NW/NS hood mounted bell now. Are they no longer being made?  So far I have struck a zero at the hobby shops I've contacted including ordering one.

I got my new GP38-2's HH SOU this week.  They run excellent and look good.
To me I can't tell very much differance from the GP38 other than the sight glass and the dynamic brake blister,... oh and no bell but they are available from Atlas (SD35 part).
Now likely there are differances I'm not noticing because I'm not counting door panels.  I'm not a real rivot counter unless I can see it without opitcal aid.
But there is one big, and I mean big thing missing on the SOU High hoods that physically tells these apart from the GP38 other than dynamics and sight glass. These are the steps which on this series GP38-2 are perhaps the most noticeable differance when compared next to a GP38.  Atlas chose not to do tool these steps into the sill.  I point it out because it is sticks out like a sore thumb thus the first Atlas GP38's are very close to what has been produced again at least for the high hoods in this series.
...... nice loco, but should be "bring on the SD40-2" as the GP38 was close enough for government work.
 The GP38-2 is a Great Loco all in all and failure to have the proper whell wells isn't a big deal because later GP38-2's did feature the wheel well steps but for the proto police this is a pretty big goof if you're looking at the rivots.
