And this is this months car, it's a Pullman Standard 5277 Cubic Foot Exterior Post Box Car with Pullman Doors and the original RailBox scheme. The model is made by Intermountain Railway Company, sold out at most places and every now and then on eBay, but you should be able to find one if you really want to.   ;)

Is the Athearn HO RTR PS 5277 boxcar acceptable:

http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH92890

I'm not sure if the door is correct; nor am I sure of the availability of this.   Does anyone make the correct aftermarket door?   What do you use to strip the lettering & paint from an Athearn?

Lastly, does anyone have any end and/or roof shots of the prototype?

Thanks,
Ed

Yeah, that's the same car type alright. I didn't realize Athearn had one in the old MDC line. The old MDC cars are really crude by today's standards, so I never even give them a second glance, and I haven't been following Athearn's re-releases extremely closely. Good to know that option is there.

Fortunately, the prototype car still has its original P-S door, so the door on the model car is fine.

I have one of the Athearn re-releases, & IMO it isn't bad. Quality-wise it's the
same as the FMCs Athearn puts out now. As to correctness, I haven't sat 1
down side by side to compare with the IM car yet, so I'm not sure. (I need to
do something with that car-just sitting with a bad fade & half done graf-hmm-
thanks for reminding me-off to the project drawer)

Hey Jeff, I would have done this car if it weren't for the fact I just finished a Railbox.  :P I've got Railbox fever. Who knows. Maybe if I breeze my coal slash mud hopper in a month... I'll do this car as well. I do have two un touched Intermountain Railboxes and an Undec as well.

Slowly progressing on my mine, barring possible extra work hours,
extreme morale smashing cold, & various distracting factors.

Sheez, THANKS to the Railwire members who correctly clued me in
on the Solvaset/Microsol debate. The lettering on this IM car is a
bear to take off, & I'm using Solvaset. (who knows how far
along I'd be if I was still using Microsol)

Kluke, the details on IM cars are great, but so far 1 of the "thingies"
that mount to the upper middle of the door has gone MIA in the
process of stripping. I did a quick check of the IM parts list, &
hopefully a replacement door will include one. (probably should
check with IM 1st though) It's late-jamming on classic country,
maybe tomorrow.

Hey Jeff-well, here's where I'm at so far as of earlier tonght:

I've found out IM lettering is a true bear to remove, the most difficult so far. I've used both
Solvaset & Microsol to varying effects. The ends still need the reporting marks taken off, but
both sides have the lettering gone. The initial color is on both sides, & this is the
proto side with some gouache wash applied, door painted, & an initial base coat for the left patch.
Being an RBOX fanatic, I've found the various yellows are not fun to match up, but still
experimenting & trying.

Actually I've been racking my brain for months & months as to achieve that ghost effect with the
lettering-until I can come up with a brainstorm or time to experiment more, I'm giving it a go with
brush painting the lettering while it's still on the sheet & then cutting out each individually. Will it
work? I hope.

Off to bed-train show tomorrow in Wooster-hope to find some gem worth a go while weeding thru all the Tyco & the 50' plug door smooth side all black lettered RAILBOXES! (want to eventually make a weekend of it & check out Timonium)

Jeff and Mitch!

Heh...I'm about where Mitch is. Except I'm using factory lettering. I'm using an Athearn model. I really don't have time to snipe out an IMRC RBOX on eBay...time is rare these days! I'll work on it this week...I promise.  ;D
