What is the black tarp-like thing covering a portion of the closest track?

It's a flange oiler setup.

Behind me (in the photo) is a rather sharp series of curves, and that device applies a little bit of grease to the flanges of anything passing over it (hence the huge greasy area around it).

It used to cover all 3 tracks, but now it seems like it's only the #2 track, which, oddly enough, is the one who's traffic generally is heading AWAY from the curve. It puzzled me too, until I realized that it's probably only there because the rest of the apparatus has been removed due to the trackwork being performed there (on the #1 track, which the train is on, and the other track, which is the Old Mainline Sub).

That looks like a P5a to me. There were only 2 L6's ever finished, the rest were scrapped before completion. L6 were 1-D-1, while P5a were 2-C-2.

I didn't take notes on my visit - don't recall if there was even a sign on the loco - but searched the net to try to find out what it was (I'm not up on PRR electrics :-[)

Following your guidance Gregg - cheers for that - I found something that said it's P5 #4700 .. or what's left of it

Changchun, China in March 1988. Still has a light rail system, but I think these beauties are long gone.

Ed, you were on the afternoon shift...
BANTRAK unwritten rules say you both can't be in the layout at the same time...something about critical mass...

Me, I was there from about 8 till 5.  Got up to about 143 cars on the coal drag...I would have put on more but the layout was too small.  ;D
