When the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad first opened, it actually used the two 4-4-0's acquired from Paulsen Spence's Louisiana Eastern to haul its trains of ex-C&NW commuter coaches. I have no record of when these were taken, but probably on a visit to Atlanta in the late 1960's:






Note both locomotives have piston valves and Walshaerts valve gear, very modern for a 4-4-0.

I must admit that while I copyrighted the next day of photos from my trip to Ohio, I failed to get them loaded on the website as I was busy preparing for my trip to Nags Head, NC this weekend. I'm afraid this means nothing from me this week.  :'( Hopefully next week, though, I will be able to show off pictures of my first BNSF "wedgies/swooshes."  ;D

Speaking of which, I finally figured out where the wye ended.  Pics MAY be ready for the next TPP.  I even found some more rails in the road.  I can now say that I have driven the entire length of the railroad.

As promised, some more critters on the Nepal Government Railway taken in February 1983...

This 2’6” railway originally ran 53 kilometres between Jaynagar (on the Indian border), Janakpur and Bizalpura in Nepal. As of the late 1980s, its equipment consisted of ten steam locomotives, twenty-five passenger coaches and vans, and fifty-two freight wagons. The line runs north from Jaynagar and then west and reaches Janakpurdham after 29 kilometres. Until 2001 the line run further north a further 24 kms to Bizalpura. After a dam and bridges were washed away, this part of the line was closed. The railway owes its existence to the lack of a road between Jaynagar and Janakpur and to the location of an important temple in Janakpur. The workshops are located at Khajuri (8 kilometres from Jaynagar, and where last week’s pic was taken)



Steam in two countries. A Nepal Governmnet Railway 0-6-2T leaves from the Nepal side of the border at Jaynagar - in the background can be seen a metre gauge YL and YP of India's North Eastern Railway.

know anything about the former owner TRONA RAILWAY but I took the
picture with the idea of learning more later!

The Trona Railway (AAR reporting mark TRC) is a 30.5 mile shortline railroad owned by IMC Chemicals.

The TRC interchanges with the Union Pacific Railroad (former Southern Pacific) at Searle, California.

The railroad has had various owners including IMC Chemicals (present), North American Chemical and Kerr-McGee Chemical.

The TRC handles 18,000 cars annually (1996 estimate). Commodities hauled include:

Sulfuric acid
Soda ash
Potash
Salt cake
Borax
Coal
Minerals
Military equipment for the U.S. Navy China Lake Facility

Passenger train service was offered on the TRC but was discontinued in 1937.

Ohh, the Trona Railway...In September 1981, after the moving van had loaded my furniture in Woodbridge (Dale City), VA, for the move to Port Saint Joe, my telephone rang just as I was about to remove it from the wall and take it to Continental Telephone. It was the Trona Railway offering me the job of General Freight Agent! Told the caller that in 5 minutes he'd have missed me, I was on my way to the same position with the Apalachicola Northern. I often wonder what life would have been like if I had moved to the California desert instead of the Florida panhandle.  :-\ :-\
