Instead of fifty years ago, how about three days ago? Y'all have no doubt heard of railfan's hotels, with rooms overlooking railroad action. Well, I stayed in one Monday and Tuesday night - the Embassy Suites, 300 Tallapoosa St., Montgomery, AL. The rooms on the North end overlook the old Montgomery Union Station and the junction of the old L&N from Mobile to Birmingham with the Western Railway of Alabama from Atlanta. Went to a Mongtomery Biscuits Class AA baseball game Monday night - like Camden Yards, the stadium is partly the old WofA freight house! Yep, same architect.

The local is coming off the Birmingham line. The track to the right is CSXT's Atlanta line. Note the colored glass in the trainshed end. The station looks very L&N.

3. Norfolk Southern SD70M-2 No. 2718 leads Norfolk Southern intermodal train, 20Q, eastbound in Berea, Ohio on 20 May 2006.

Started off at LTEX in McDonald OH and found this Army switcher:

The shops at LETX are the old engine house of the Youngstown & Northern. So I pulled out my mountain bike and rode down the old Y&N roadbed going toward Youngstown and found this along the CSX:


This is Ohio Junction where the CSX interchange with the Ohio Central, The foreground tracks are the OC. Notice the lovely mountain of garbage in the background. A map of the area:

The crest in the rail is the start of the OC. This train was backing some old cars into a scrap dealer to be cut up.

A VERY new gondola full of scrap:

While watching the scrap train do it's thing 4 trains went by behind it that I couldn't see One with BN green at the front.

Today went to Lordstown OH NS yard behind the GM cobalt plant, found this cool tankcar:

Is that a real tankcar ? Why the clown paint job ? Is that Army pink diesel really a faded red , or was that found near the clown tank car ?

The tankcar was real, but I don't see any brakegear or airhoses ??? The army switcher was a hair redder, but I highlighted the photo to let the underside detail show. The paint was faded bad and were real pink on top.

I have a cool shot showing the whole area, but can't post it online. 4631x882 1.0MB, new camera does panoramic shots automaticly.

In the photo by Chris333, there are CSX "coke express" hoppers, behind the new gondola, in the background. My question is, has Atlas or MTL ever made a 90 ton hopper with that wording?

I think those hoppers are X-tra tall and wouldn't match up with a normal sized hopper. There are tons of them down the street from me.

The Atlas model doesn't match the Coke Express cars. The Coke Express cars have been rebuilt from regular coal hoppers with extended sides and ends, as coke is lighter than coal. This allows the car to haul more coke before it reaches capacity than a regular coal hopper.

Above I said there were a ton of those hoppers down the road. On the way to work I looked, they were NS and say "HIGH TOP" on them.
