Building a legacy AMH Kit: Modern Station #5832

 Started working on building an old AHM modern looking station after it's been sitting in the box for over 40 years. I'll start posting some picture of the structure as I get into it. I'm hoping it will look better than some of the modern structures from Kato, we'll see.

Here are the AMH Kits I'm working to put together. The #5832 kit is my starting point to use for my Secaucus Transfer Station. I also picked up the #5924 Terminal Train Shed also made by AHM (Pola). I'm going to install it a little differently and make some modifications along the way.

I got the structure partially built and started to modify the passenger platforms.

Finally finished the Train shed. It was like a bathroom tile project!. Next step is to mask the shed and airbrush all the members as well as making the platforms resemble concrete.

I added two Walther butterfly passenger station shelters to the original platforms that are in between the main station and the AHM train shed to make the terminal look bigger.

I also replaced the original roof with a flat roof made of styrene.

I like  it! Those large glass sheds looks very impressive and they are not often seen on model layouts. Likely because there likely weren't many of those utilized by American railroads.  I suppose if I started looking at European-theme layouts, I would see more of those sheds.  Anyways, good to see one utilized in the way you did.

As far as the station goes, I hope your flat roof has some slope - otherwise rainwater will just pool on the roof.

Logically there could be more butterfly sheds added beyond the train shed.
Curious why you didn't paint the frame before adding the glass...  that's going to be a lot of masking.

And following up on Pete's comment, add some drain suppers and downspouts at the low end of the fat roof.  It will make it look more realistic and add an interesting detail that no one but me will notice!

The old St Louis Union station had a passenger train shed. So did Union Station in Chicago. They weren't glass-roofed, tho, but looked very similar to this model.

I had the #5832 station on a layout of mine for a couple of decades and really liked it. The station looked like it could be American.
