On vacation, in 1978, we saw two the same day in Montana. The first was not long after entering MT from Idaho, and included a bulkhead flat of lumber in the St Regis river. This was after the electrics were retired, but the poles and messenger wires were still in place. The crane operator decided that the pole was in the way, so he swung his boom around and knocked it, and the attached wires, into the river, with the flat ad lumber.
The second was between Deer Lodge and Butte, far enough from I-90 that we really couldn't see any details. Not a good day for the MILW.
And, if one knows where to look, part of the last train out of Washington, when they abandoned the line, is still there, alongside what's now a public trail. They dumped some boxcars, and simply pushed them out of the way, reassembled the rest of the train, and went on. The cars are still there today!
