That should be a fun design project.  I hope you're aware of the detailed drawings done in an old MR from 197...1? or 2?  Something like that.  You need trucks with a 68" inch wheelbase.  A quick search shows that a MLW Dofasco truck is 67"  and I predict that is the closest you'll find.  Plus, it has the correctly-sized 40" wheels.

Similarly, Alco RSD-5 trucks have a 67" wheelbase on the short side.  You could chop up a couple Atlas trucks and pickups and go from there.   Or better yet, 3D print a new gear case and use Atlas RSD gears in it.  Reverse engineering the Atlas gear case shouldn't be too difficult.

David, the granite looks great....castings or carved?
Otto K.

Otto,
It was mostly castings with hand carved to connect them.
Here is what it looked like with just the castings

I think you're right on the front truck, it's basically a 4-8-0 frame pivoted under the body.

However, I suspect that the rear section is a 4-8-4, with both "pilot" trucks pivoted under the frame.

ARM says delay in SP Cinders, so off to the ballast and rock/sand stash. Found ground asphalt from Alaska I had
and mixed with with desert sand and WS Black Cinders.

Sweet, thanks for the truck tips! The diagram I got from the chessie museum gave me trucks with a spacing of 70, 70, 70, 68, so I was rounding up to 70. I can just as easily round it all down to 67. I don’t think 1/160th of 3 inches is going to be very noticeable.

And no, I had no idea about the MR issue. I can’t seem to find any places to view it online, are there any recommendations in that regard?

The issue in question is February 1971, pages 47-49, 'C&O's steam-turbine locomotives'. If you have a subscription to MRR, you can access that issue at trains.com/mrr/magazine/archive-access/

Packed up the layouts and the stacks of stuff, and put them into storage for a few months...

Hopefully by September the drywall work will be far enough along that I can bring them into the new house fearlessly.

Until then, I shall rely on old photos and living through you all's work vicariously.
