It's interesting that these photos don't confirm that they had removable bogies, i.e. maybe they were standard trailers just branded Flexi-Van.  The first photo appears to be a standard TOFC car underneath, but we can't see it.  Hard to tell what's going on with the 20ft trailer on the left, whether it has wheels under it or not.  I'm struggling to see how it could be loaded on the TOFC at the same hieght as the one next to it without having wheels underneath.

Never heard of them before... but I don't typically pay much attention to equipment that didn't make its way onto the NP.

Setting aside my bias, one might consider researching "strick-tainer" in the various NYC propaganda, Railway Age, and perhaps Jane's Freight Containers (the entry for Strick in my '70 edition of the latter publication is not helpful). For what it's worth, the listing for them didn't change at all between the July '66 and October '68 ORERs, showing 100 of them, numbered 262001 to 262199, dimensions of 20' long, 8' wide, 13'9" on a 48" 5th wheel. Door openings are listed as 7' 5 1/2" wide and 8' 0 1/4" tall (no notes about a side door). Apparently, the NYC containers were designed to be paired together and moved as a 40' unit, which makes me think the peculiar supports showing up are part of the chassis.

The only other operators of 'Stricktaners' that I've found thus far is REA, who listed a grand total of eight... not exactly a common sight.

Hey at least we are making use of what we learned in the Ebay search thread

I found a 1963 NYC Service Guide, and among the 127 pages of detailed information, there is a section on Flexi-Van service.
It details Interchange operations with other Roads.
International Fexi-Van Operations including a photo of an NYC Flexi-van in Tokyo, Japan.

It lists 'Seagoing' Flexi-vans which includes (104) 17'9" boxs owned by APL and States Marine, as well as (211) 19' 10.5" boxs owned by States Marine and Trans-American and United States Line.

The remainder listed are 35', 36' and 40' units.

The document also lists all of the NYC Owned trailers (no 20' boxes listed)

If you watch the NYC Odyssey Part 1 and 2, you'll see several sets of Strick-Tainers on the mail trains, but no clear views.. Typically 1 pair out of every 10 trailers.

I finally found a clear-closeup photo of a pair of containers riding on a flexivan.
