N Scale 1950's Gas Station....

Just finished this today so thought I'd post a couple pictures. I'll post more later along with links to the print files. One will probably use this gas station alone but it could be used with other parts of the truck stop complex  ( HERE ) if one so desired.

You often read that a filament printer isn't much good for N scale objects but I'm quite happy with the Ender 3 Pro for a lot of these projects. I will finally get the resin printer up and going I bought but sure like the no mess instant results with the filament printer. For most objects that you view at normal viewing distance it can go a good job.

Ok a few preview pictures....

Sumner, the building looks good, but to me the double vertical walls (signs?) on the roof over the pumps look a bit odd.  Do you have any 1:1 scale examples of this feature?

I didn't realize that it was a prerequisite to have an actual similar building to post a design here.  Since you are implying that is the case I won't be posting here anymore as I design a lot of stuff out of my head with what I like and haven't checked it for period perfect authenticity.  I'm not saying anyone else should like or use it.

It seems obvious to me that the type of work I do probably isn't of value to this board.  I spent a considerable amount of time on this and shared the print files. I've had over 180 views on here and a total of 4 likes and one reply that questions what I've done. See you,

No, nothing like that is prerequisite.  I was simply curious since I have never seen this type of design. Thanks for the photos.  I learned something new.

Why so defensive?  When  was typing my post I was actually thinking of how not to make the question sound non-critical (because it isn't).  I was not implying anything. I just never encountered that type of design. It was just a simple question.  How would you have asked my question in a way that the respondent would not get defensive or offended?

EDIT:  I actually gave your initial post thumbs-up when I first saw it.

Hey Sumner, don't take offense to lack of likes on a project you've worked hard on. The up/down voting system has been a bit of a touchy topic on the board because it has the tendency to cause some discord among the members. Never look at your likes as a judgement of your work. Plus, this subforum does not have the level of traffic as others so you're not reaching the full audience. As far as Peteski's comments, as he said he was just inquiring and that is a normal thing for anyone to do on this board, ask questions about design choices or methods used in a build. Remember the motto, "better modeling through peer pressure". Praise has to be earned and isn't handed out like candy on Halloween as is on other boards. With that said, your service station looks good, and I like that you printed the garage door separate so you can have it open or closed. This model can be used on a lot of layouts if someone was in need of a service station.

Nice work.  Can you sand filament prints smooth.  I think some of the Nscale stuff done in filament was probably using a nozzle that was too big.  For a lot of the stuff you’ve posted such as the switch and servo mounts filament is probably more tough

I would simply say fabulous,   Keep on posting.   I find it interesting to see what folks have done with all additive printing precesses. It opens ones mind on the possibilites.  I often find and learn from others  on what they have done.  Thanks and keep posting.

Since two of the three prototype photos are Texaco, and the third has been modernized, I suspect that this was a standard Texaco design.  Before the megamergers of the 60s and later many companies had "standard" architecture for service stations, as part of their corporate image.

Today, they're "convenience stores", with no "service" available, and look more-or-less alike.

Was waiting for the weekend update to roll around, but I am using Sumner's Napa model in conjunction with one of Chris333's garages both in filament. With a bit of model tuning and proper orientation, layer lines are generally not visible, even up close when printed from a PrusaMini with a .4mm nozzle.
That said as long as layer height is lower than .15 you can generally get away with a quick spray bomb of automotive filler primer followed with a quick sanding.

I'd like to offer this comment - feel free to ignore it

the 3D forum is pretty unique - when someone posts files here (or links to their work) they are sharing the results of their work with the rest of us to use  - often free of charge.  Some of the stuff is really good and of commercial quality , some (like my projects) were developed to fit the creators personal needs - and if they are good enough for them - then so be it .

Now - TRW has always had a bit of an edge to it, especially when it comes to modeling - 3D is modeling, just not in the traditional sense - were exploring new techniques to come up with some unique models that in the past would take a lot of cutting, sanding, filing and gluing .. but it takes just as long - maybe even longer to work up the drawings, test prints, adjustments as doing something in styrene ..

This gas station model is a unique addition to anyone modeling the 50s to the present .. I remember my dad working in one - and you can still see them on the side of the road some places - probably shut down ..

To all who share here - thanks .

Nice work! Walter Teague's classic Texaco station. While the station design was used throughout the country, Texaco only used the canopy in the southwest. The canopy served as a sunshade. Also, I would like to see pictures of your model taken at "ground level". Your pictures appear to be taken at "roof top" height emphasizing or distorting the canopy sign elements. Lets see that station from an n scale person's point of view. Thanks.
