The Amphicar 770 is an amphibious car that was produced in small numbers between 1960 and 1965. The Amphicars were marketed sold until 1968. Although not a commercial succes, the Amphicar is well known and proved to be a quite good swimmer. And that is why we offer the Amphicar both as road car and in a chopped version that can be placed on a water surface of your layout. A ‘driver’ is part of the kit. Also a set with both versions is available.
Models are delivered unpainted.

Cool!  The very first time I saw one of these it was cruising a canal in Amsterdam in the late 1970s.  I was quite astonished.

Yes, it is a bit of a rarity. Although I know this amphibious car, I initially wasn't aware that it was a German design. With its flamboyant and tailfins it reminds me of a miniature replica US car of that era. I think the Amphicar was anticipated for the US-market back then.

I may get one of these, time period of the layout notwithstanding.  Is the driver removable?  Isn't this supposed to be driven by an obnoxious rich kid in a Hawaiian shirt, accompanied by a car show model in a bikini?  That's how I remember the couple I saw in the 1960s.

When I lived up in Leelanau county (1990s) there was a fellow who brought one up to the boat show every year.  My kids were quite surprised to see someone drive a little sports car down the boat ramp and into the harbor.

Made in (West) Germany with a Triumph engine.  Approximately twice the weight and HP of my lawn mower.  But I do have a couple acres, so it is a pretty good sized lawn mower.

I'm looking at the shoreline approach the diorama vehicle is making and that raises lots of questions about the front boot offering ample buoyancy to approach at that angle, especially with soggy shore eastern US rivers.  Was that doable?  Or did you need an angle of water entry like a boat ramp to ease it in?  That pic of LBJ's car looks like it should probably shed one corn fed Senator so it's guaranteed to reach the other shore.

Even your better stunt drivers usually use a ramp, or at least a gently sloping beach.  But there is the occasional exception- check out about 3:15 in to this....

That is such a cool vehicle. I have seen these occasionally at the car shows.  I would order couple, but the shipping cost from DM-Toys in Germany to USA is a bit steep for just a small model.  I guess I'll wait until I can place a larger order with DM-Toys.

It looked like a bit of a damp ride, but is probably pretty fun.

There was a man in Pasco, Washington, in the 1960s and 70s with one.  He worked at the Hanford Project, across the Columbia River, and commuted in it.  Driving to West Pasco and crossing the river was less than half as far, and avoided the traffic in Kennewick and Richland, making for a much faster commute.
