Been working with Teddy Bear or faux fur, it's great for HO as in the videos from Steve Bennett and John Arthur, but will have
to cut down for N. Also painted crossings with stencil and masking.

Thank you, this is really helping try out methods I've watched and read the last few years.

I'm thinking the grade crossing needs some attention...  Instead of having the concrete/asphalt surface continue across the track, perhaps some timbers such as these...  Seems like a more readily maintained installation...  also adds another texture to the scene...

What I have learned so far on this small square.

1.) Coloring ties is kind of a pain, it's more about different shades of the same color vs. a bunch of different colors.
2.) Secondary track looks way better with the ties cut and spaces with some removal for covering gaps.
3.) Faux fur looks better way trimmed for N scale than HO. It needs to adapt to the are you're modeling for grasses and needs dirt sprinkled over the top to cover open areas.
4.) I tried not to selectively compress, already small.
5.) Modeling roads are better with sheet styrene than poured "smooth it" or spackle.
6.) I was able to produce real looking mainline and secondary track.
7.) Still to come, sinking track lower than surrounding are on upper level and bridge installation with realistic embankment and bridge shoes.
