Puffy Stuff

I made this video in 2016, but never made it available on youtube ..  anyway -- its a method of making some scenery using some quilting material I got on Amazon for $10 at the time .. apparently now that the pandemic hit, quilting is a thing .. prices are much more .. enjoy

Nice effect.

I don’t know how easy or hard it would be to tear this material, but I think it would add some natural randomness to the scene if you roughly tore the material rather than cutting it with scissors, making a hard edge rather than a tapered irregular edge. Or maybe tease the edge with your wire brush while gluing down the material.

Please excuse my anal retentive-ness.

It doesn't tear very well .. so you have to tease it out with the brush ..

Try a pair of pinking shears to make your cuts. The zigzag pattern of the teeth may help that... and let your edge cuts meander... avoiding straight cuts.

good stuff, John, thanks for sharing
i could not help but notice the painted backdrop and how well the painting is done.
very nice work.
i think the puffy stuff can be used in a variety of ways.
i liked the way you fluffed up the fibers and then added turf
really looks good...like you said "3D effect" is well done!

Excellent tip I'd say!
Certainly many a plywood layout could have done with such a makeover.
My former friends layout [I worked on] we utilised polystyrene forms because of my modelling familarity with carving it, with a variety of textures such as this, although he was always hesitant to break wth 'tradition'.
