Isn't there a 40 year max life for freight cars? I swear I remember reading that somewhere.
Yes, for cars built prior to July 1974, in interchange service. Owners can rebuild them and apply for an extension to 50 years. Cars built after July 1974 are also good for 50 years interchange service.
Side note: this Rule came into effect in the 1970s so there is no "40 year rule" for those of us modeling earlier eras.
