IMO, cars look much better when their ride height is lowered to match prototypical ride heights.  I went to all body mounted couplers which allowed me to consider lowering my cars.  I as I worked through lowering my entire fleet the process became a fairly efficient production line.  In the end I felt the effort was well worth it.

Interesting enough there looks to be an identical boat as this on a flat car (with another boat on a 2nd flat car as well) taken at Outville in 1967 on page 39 of the book, "Columbus Crossroads of Change: The Rail Photography of Paul Geiger around Columbus, Ohio 1964-1979"

I had trouble with that pic being dated 1986, because I remembered Paul Geiger being behind the camera earlier than the 80s. Was there a boat manufacturer in that area of Ohio back then, where these boats were coming from?

yep! That's the USS Paul F. Foster, started 20 years ago! Balsa, fiberglass, and styrene.    It's been in the water only twice, but I can't bring myself to let it go.  I still work on it from time to time.

I've no idea where the boats are from/going. There are no boat mfg's that I'm aware of. And there is no mention on any track charts(PRR/PC/CR) or books I have on the Panhandle of a boat mfg being rail served. Seeing a photo dated 1986 though I'll be asking around up at the next Marion Union Station slide show this month to see if any of the folks there can shed light on the boats. Several of them worked for the railroad (CR and predessors) as did Paul around Ohio and maybe they might know. I gotta have one for my layout now.

I'll take a wild guess based on the general appearance and then what looks like a small oval maker's badge up towards the bow that it could be a Penn Yan cruiser.  They were manufactured at the north end of one of the finger lakes in the town of Penn Yan NY.  They are no longer in business.  From that location they could easily be shipping west to somewhere on the Great Lakes or even the Mississippi.  Lots of possibilities.  And I don't know why I even thought of them other than the general look.

Not a Pen Yan... hull form is all wrong. Chris Craft made some wood lapstrake cabin cruisers with rounded transom like that, but couldn’t find any supporting photos that matched. Not many of this type left.

Chris Craft had a plant in Jamestown / Facloner NY along the Erie main, but I think it was closed by the 1960's. Perhaps someone else took over that facility for awhile?
