Turntables- what is the arch for?

Turntables almost all (or often) seem to have an arch in the middle.

What is that arch for?

Lights?

Clearance?

Power pole to run the turntable itself?

This... It allows an attachment point for the electric line to the motor that can pivot while the bridge turns...

If the TT isn't electrically powered, no arch is needed.  Besides the "Armstrong" type, like the NH above, there were also air-motor driven TTs that ran off the locos brake air.  I've never heard of one, but somewhere I wouldn't be surprised if there was a gas or diesel powered TT.
