Forgive my ignorance. I'd like to be able to pick up my locomotive without dislodging the handrails EVERY time.

Suggestions?

All of my later (2nd?) run U25/28Cs have well-attached handrails. My two from the initial run were like some of my Intermountain tunnel motors: all it took was a breeze and the handrails popped loose.

I super glued mine in using DAP RapidFuse glue (w/the turquoise cap) from Home Depot. I used a pin and did them 2 stanchions at a time

I really like this glue I mentioned vs other superglues. It has certainly done the trick when others did not on my tunnel motors.

Just put drop on some aluminum foil, clear plastic window from a business envelope, etc. and use the needle.
