             I got to run trains today on the downsized layout Wasatch N Scale set up http://www.wasatchnscale.org in a church recreation hall for a private op session complete with masks and distancing. Among the trains I brought to our DCC layout were the two Bachmann Spectrum Peter Witt street cars I purchased a few years ago when they were released, a Los Angeles Railway in the later Green Cream and Orange scheme and a Brooklyn & Queens car (my dad was from Brooklyn). These models are DCC equipped and are some of the nicest models I have seen. Nicely heavy weight with a detailed body and beautifully decorated. Smooth running, with an operating headlight on the front and the rear one on when backing up, which the real cars hardly did without someone watching the rear mounted pole. These models make me want to build a city with tracks in the pavement, not KATO Uni Tram , with real routes and a car barn. Very impressive, but over looked and now harder to find models. I have 12 of them, I agree they are nice little models.

 has a bunch of stuff for HO scale (but very much useable in N ) that I have.

Trolleys are a nice sideline to a class one RR layout especially one set in the transition era.

There have been a couple times when these were sold at "blow out prices" that made them hard to pass up.  I picked mine up for, IIRC, $50- which included the built in decoder (ok, a Bachmann decoder, but mine has worked very well).  At prices like that, they were a terrific value.  My only complaint is the body is sort of "generic" and is at best a stand in for the Chicago Surface Lines prototype that is appropriate for my planned layout.  But they look and perform very well overall, and, well, frankly, to date, no visitor has ever looked at it and said "the details on that don't match a real CSL car (the only reason I know is that my kids gave me a fantastic book on CSL trolleys for Christmas 25 years ago).

I think that the initial sales suffered a lot because just about everyone had one of the cheap Bachmann trolleys or PCC cars that suffered from all the Bachmann faults of the time- cracked gears, poor detailing, thick paint, and toy-like appearance. People assumed that the new trolley would be made to that older (lack of) quality standard. The Peter Witt cars are an entirely different animal- like the difference between a 1970s era Bachmann Prarie and a 2010-ish Bachmann Consolidation.

Anyway, I am entirely satisfied with mine- it was the first Bachmann product I owned that I thought was comparable in quality to Atlas or IM products.  The Peter Witt encouraged me to buy some "21st century" Bachmann steamers- which have also been pleasant surprises and good values (at least, at the discount prices I paid, don't get me started on Bachmann MSRP).

I don't own one of these, but I had the opportunity to examine and run one owned by a friend in my NTRAK club.  I have to say that I was also impressed by this model.  Its design is good, and it runs very well.  The details (including phototched parts) are also very well done.

Agreed, these are light years beyond their other trolleys.

Yes, they're excellent models. The actual prototype is the Brill-built Baltimore Peter Witt car design. The particular car number Bachmann used on its Baltimore-livery model is the restored car at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum. Many Bachmann trolley models are based on Baltimore prototypes. Their G-gauge "large scale" open and closed cars are also based on Baltimore  trolleys preserved at the museum.

This conversation leads me to wonder how many other trolleys or small inter-urbans might have the same wheelbase as the Bachmann Peter Witt and if there might be potential for using the mechanism with resin or 3D shells, or even with one or another of the old wood-brass North Shore and PE kits.

Just writing that, I realize I need to hunt through some of my old boxes of stuff....

I haven't been quite as fortunate with mine. I agree it looks gorgeous but performance is not up to the mark. The model starts to stutter about speed step 5 (of 28 in my NCE powercab) and moves steadily only around 13 or 14. After some running, the model automatically slows to a stop and then wouldn't move until track power is switched off.

I got it in a blowout sale in Trainworld for $39.99 (excl shipping). For those interested, there are still pieces available at $49.99 (dcc equipped). I've heard Bachmann service is great, will have to contact them about this.
