... So I did some photographic studies and learned that, while slushy, melting snow is shiny, plain snow is dead flat. It looks a little shiny only because of the "sparkling" effect, which I found impossible to reproduce convincingly.
Just curious but how did you weather the sidewalk? I really like the random mottled look.
@Hornwrecker suggested ground marble dust for this purpose on my Polar Express roofs, but never got around to trying it. Wonder if it would work here for the sparkle effect right atop the still wet matte medium to stick to.
It was a little tedious.
Oh golly, since it was a prop for a test, I spent like less than a minute making the sidewalk. It's pre-scribed Evergreen sheet (hence the wide, deep scores). I slapped on a coat of generic tan acrylic paint, and sloshed on some India ink wash--if you look carefully, you can just make out the two broad brush strokes running lengthwise.
Whose fire hydrant is that?

...washes never give me that fine mottled look. Especially on those slabs closer to the street. Usually more of a puddled look.
Not to get OT, but damn do I wish I was able to get one of your N scale rulers, DKS. It's also part of @tom mann 's secret streaking technique. And no, not the kind of streaking where tom leaves the house, nude, wearing nothing but an NZT ruler.
