A pretty awesome brush for use with chalks.

A few minutes ago I was scanning an order to check all the quantities before sending it on to packing, and I noticed these pretty sweet brushes. From what the pick-ticket told me, it's some kind of foundation. I guess with the brush built in. It's pretty good quality. I popped open the tube to have a closer look and to snap this picture:

Only downside is that the cost, as it is listed on the pick-ticket, is $25.

It's a quality flat-topped, fine, soft-bristle brush. It's got to be about 3/4ths of an inch in diameter.

Yeah... I was going to say that these super-soft makeup brushes have been a go-to for weathering for... I dunno... a millennium or so?

Can't blame Cody, tho', since - unless there's something we don't want to know about  - he's probably had no occasion to explore the makeup aisle at the drugstore.

Cody, plain makeup brushes (without the built-in foundation gimmick) are only a couple of bucks each. They're also available in kits with several sizes and tip shapes.

I've only seen the round-top ones. And most have bristles that aren't all that fine. This thing felt like one o them top-shelf artist's paintbrushes that my grandmother has.
It's made by Youngblood, which is a salon-quality cosmetics brand. Far as I know their stuff ain't carried in the local drugstore.

I bought 2 pretty soft make up brushes at target for about 4 bucks each,  i would think rounded top might be better when trying to lightly apply weathering, just the tips in the center get the powder instead of the whole flat part.

Yes, rounded tips are normal, but flat tips are also a standard item in the makeup aisle. They're a good solution. Besides, they're cheap enough to cut the tip shape yourself, with a sharp pair of shears! Why not?

Your grandmother's sable (mink or red weasel) artist's brushes are very expensive, especially the larger sizes. I just priced a Kolinsky 14mm round... over $300! Yikes!

I would not use the makeup brushes for any wet process. They're good for powders only, and will shed if used with paints or washes.

Okay, that's all pretty much the opposite of what I use with chalks, that's why I was wondering.

I like using a deer foot brush for the chalks, it is a nice balance of a round and a flat brush. You can pick them up at art stores for a failrly inexpensive amount.

I do like the soft make-up brushes from the make-up section of the drugstore...they really do a great job on the chalks and pastels.

Good for spreading ballast as well.

One of the advantages to being marred is I get my wife's cast offs. Apparently they do get old for makeup use but never seem to deteoriate for weathering.

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday as I had another one come through my station in an outgoing order.
I find that pretty much every brush I use tends to flick the ballast more than gently spread it. I'm hoping that one ends up in the damages bin so that I can claim it and test it out.
