POM = Polyoxymethylene (aka acetal, polyacetal and polyformaldehyde).  Produced by different chemical firms with slightly different formulas and sold variously by such names as Delrin, Celcon, Ramtal, Duracon, Kepital and Hostaform.

Aka ... often white but in our case, that greasy black plastic of which many of our model rollingstock trucks are made.

I suppose though that if you first make up a word by cramming 2-3 words together you can then call it an acronym when you then have to shorten your long, made up word.

Chemists often have VERY long words, especially organic chemists, because their chemicals a basically "a bunch of stuff crammed together".  The name HAS to be long to accurately describe the molecule.  "Polyoxymethylene" is a very short word in chemistry.

There is an international standard for these codes, referred to as material codes, for all polymers.  My company requires that all polymeric codes be physically marked on a part so when an assembly of parts is broken down for recycling, so each part's material can be easily identified and mixed with other like materials when before recycling.
