I don't know if anyone has mentioned them yet, but the Walthers kits "State Street" and University Avenue" shops are kits that don't stick out as much as the DPM kits on most layouts, I particularly like the one story building from the State street kit. Walthers has discontinued both of them but they are easily had from the auction site.

Shapeways has a lot of great finds as you already saw. You could also find some building parts.
I am currently looking at making some art deco buildings, but I guess that's too modern for you. I made an art deco gas station and a waiting room based on a couple of great buildings from London Underground
