I've noted these box cars at Fox Valley:

As are described with:
This car is unique as we have added 6 roof hatches to each car, for use in spent grain service.
Painted in standard boxcar red, these cars have an orange door with the outline of a familiar logo.40' Short Rib-Sided Spent Grain Box Car, Milwaukee Road

My question is ... are these prototypes or just .....
Any idea or era?

They are models of real cars. Photos of two cars on page 21 of Morning Sun's 'Milwaukee Road Color Guide Vol. 2' by Doug Nighswonger.

Just to clarify, these cars were assigned to spent grain service for the Miller Brewery in Milwaukee. Spent grain is a leftover from the brewing process, and is typically used in animal feed.
I don't have an exact time period for these cars, but I suspect that they were in service through the mid to late 1970s. Will do some more digging later on unless someone else has the answer.

Best wishes, Dave

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
