Roger I purchased a set called Sketch & Tone, containing basic earth tones; Red Iron Oxide Shade, Raw Umber Shade, Burnt Sienna, Paynes Grey, Yellow Ochre Shade and Black. Apparently the shades are a lighter version of the color. The set provides foam rubber tools for application but I still find myself using the same stiff brush I previously used with other chalks.

Experimentation is essential. IMHO Dullcote is still the best sealer I have found. You still have to build up layers but I find that it's harder to over-do it that way.

I saw this thread the other night, right after I finished putting tape on my ESM car to protect the questionably pretty green, to represent a more recent patch....weird that we were working on weathering the same car!

Anywho, here is mine, more can be seen in Weekend Update...:)

Your Amfleet cars with the weathered undercarriage look pretty darn good too - so does the caboose, and the tank car.

I like it as well , Much more subtle than my effort. It is crazy we were working on the same car together. Call me next time and we can do it again! LOL

Today Gavin was weathering a couple cars and here he is weathering his Atlas CSX 50' boxcar.
We have been coaching each other and studying Google for images.

Well he would like to get $100.00 per car as he is pretty locomotive crazy !!!!

I have told him when he can do them totally on his own we may sell them on the site for him to spend on his trains. He is pretty good over here with chores to save up and buy what he wants. He does however get the SPECIAL rate !!!!!

Well, show him Tom Mann's book, and then tell him he's about 90% of the way to that standard.  Then tell him to get back to work!

you are blessed to have 1) a good egg all around and 2) a grandkid with a good enough eye to learn weathering to that level.

Thanks Philip, I don't need to whip him much but usually I need to keep up !!
A full time job when he is here. He is either weathering , building something or running the layout. The good part is I can sometimes get him to stop for awhile to watch American Pickers with me. He loves that too.
Crazy Kid !!!

Some nice work all around!
Here's a few from my last round.  Oils, acrylics and powders.
